Advantages: Everything!

Disadvantages: Nothing! :)

I have had a passionate intrest in aviation since I was 7 years old and I took my first flight from Glasgow Intl - Reus (Spain), flying with Brittania Airways. Everything about the flight fanscinated me, and it was, without a doubt the best part of my holiday.

As Im still finshing off my education, I can't yet take on a career in aviation, but I intend to one day.

Id like to take the focus away from myself and focus on those who have a fear/phobia of flying. 'Aerophobia' can be passed down a family by children watching parents being anxious while flying or by parents discouraging flying althogether. It can also be a personal thing, if there is something about flying that may have a personal impact on you and your personal feelings. Another reason someone may be Aerophobic is because they are not in control of the aircraft. Some people have issues with putting theirself in other peoples hands. The last reason, and the most difficult people to cure, are those who fear flying because they have had a bad incedent on an aircraft. This is hard to cure because you can't make someone forget an expierence, however, you can make someone learn from an expeirnce.

I am now going to give you some advice which will help anytype of Aerophobic in one way or another.

1. Use relaxation methods. You are best to write this down and practice prior to flying. Close your eyes. Rest your shoulders against the back of the seat. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow the engine noises to go through your right ear, and out your left. Sink into your chair. Keep your two feet flat on the floor, focus on your feet. Feel the weight of your body on your feet. Focus. Focus. Keep your two arms flat on your armrests. You may have to explain to the neighbour your situation and ask for both armrests. Relax. Forget everything that surrounds you. Take away all aspects of reality. Don't feel the movement of the aircraft. Move with the aircraft. This is your bodys natural movement. (try download a seaside tune or relaxing piano noise to your MP3, It will help relaxation). Think of your favouite place to be. YOU ARE THERE. Sitting on an armchair, moving your body. Relaxxxxx.....
If you hear any disturbing noises or PM announcments.. block them out, no matter what do not come out of your relaxtion mode untill you feel comfortable to do so.. you are best doing this during take off as it causes the most tension.

2. While in the air take everything away from its reality... the window is NOT a window, its a TV screen showing you the blue sky and clouds. The seat is not just a seat.. its a relaxing reclineable armchair situated in a relaxing beauty parlor.. or if you have a good imagintion, its a flying chair soaring though the clouds. The aeroplane is NOT an aeroplane, Its a sea boat gently bouncing up and down and side to side.

3. Always look at the Air Hostess/ Host. They are relaxed, calm, and acting like everything is perfectly normal. Why? Because everything is perfectly normal. If you ever feel frightened or nervous look at one of your Cabin Crew members, If they dont look nervous or frightned, then theres obviosly nothing to be worried about.

4. Savour every second. Dont think about how long you have in the air.. think about how long untill you are safe, on two feet, in your own control, every second that passes in air means a second closer to you finally being on two feet.

5. Enjoyy Yourself. Whether its relaxing, keeping busy, or talking to your neighbour, when your enjoying yourself your mind is taken away from all reality.

Facts to think about.

1. Your cabin crew fly everyday of their lifes, and you are getting worked up about one flight? think about it.

2. Have you had an accident on an aircraft before? Well as unforunate as it may be, recent statistics show the odds of having an accident on an aircraft is 11,000,000,000 to 1 . Wow! Think yourself lucky my friend. If youve had an accident before, think yourself safe, with odds like those, do you really think it could happn twice in a lifetime? Think about it.

3. Your Pilot had to pay £60,000 pounds just to fly you! He/She now has one of the most hardest careers to get, and had to work just as hard as any Doctor/educator/surgeon. He/She had to go through at least 7 years of training and an uncountable number of examinations and tests. He/she had to get a Degree in Physics and 4 Highers. He/She had to start training whilst in High School. He/She has to get occasional health examination to make sure there is no chance of anything happening to them whilst flying you! Would it be fair to doubt his abilty to fly you safely? Think about it.

4. Recent searches shows that Aviation is one of the most safest way to travel. So, you were more likey to have an accident whilst traveling to the airport than on the plane. Now, think about that one!

5. Your aircraft manged to travel to your airport safely, why shouldn't it travel back safely with you on board? Your pilot managed to fly the passengers to your airport safely? Why shouldn't He/She travel you safely too? In the airport your watch hundreds of aircrafts take off prior to your flight, what makes you think that because YOUR on the plane, Its not going to fly safely!

Tips to fly safely and healthly -

1. ALWAYS Keep Your Seatbelt Fastended Whilst Seating!
2. ALWAYS Check Your Nearest Emergency Exit!
3. ALWAYS Excerisise Your Body And Take Atleast One Full-Isle Walk Every Half Hour.
4. Need An Exuse To Walk Down The Isle? No Problem! Drink Plenty Of Water. It Benifits You In So Many Ways In The Air.
5.Kepp Your Mobile Off At All Times.
6. Avoid Sleeping.
7. Do Not Over Consume Alchoholic Drinks.
8. Listen To Your Cabin Crew, They Give Advice For Reasons!

I sincerly hopw you have learned something today :).

Summary: You Only Live Once.. Lifes Too Short Too Miss Out On Flying

I tend to load up on sleeping tablets, but it can be tricky knowing the best time to take them as I don't like taking them on the plane.

Metally, alchahol would be helpfull. However, it has no effect on fighting the problem and could cause them to collapse during during the flight.
DVT (Deep Vien Thrombosis) is what we would call blood clots. More people then ever are getting blot clots due to lack of water and excersize whilst flying, when your 'pissed' you are less likey to worry about how much water you drink or exersize you take. Finally, in the case of an emergency, if you have been drinking alchahol, you have less chances of evacuating the aircraft, if youve over consumed it, then unfortunatly, you have almost no chance. Id reccomend you advice your friends to see a flight phycologist in replacement to alchahol.
