Advantages: Reach places quickly

Disadvantages: Sticky faces from expelled vodka and orange

I love flying, I have never felt unsafe and am about to embark on a round the world trip, obviously flying quite a lot. I was born abroad (Singapore) so travelled shortly before being born (although unsuprisingly I don't remember this). I do remember flying back to Britain several times and finding it wonderfully exciting as a kid. I supposse when young one is blissfully unaware of the dangers and then once used to this mode of transport I have probably remained naively so. The news is full of air related horror stories, although I believe it is their infrequency which makes them news worthy. If the news reported every car crash or near miss in cars it would fill the whole bulletin and more every night. The opportunities which air travel give us, to visit new places, experience new places, new cultures and broaden ourselves and enrich our lives I think are more worth any risk than driving to and from work everyday.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, hates flying, The first time she flew was a couple of years ago when we went to Dublin for a short break. I will admit if you are slightly scared a tiny Fokker 50 does not perhaps inspire the most confidence. The bus drove us out onto the tarmac at Leeds Bradford, we get out to see the plane somewhat dwarfed by the coach we had just left. I can see this would not inspire the most confidence. The flight was full of businessmen and wegot free drinks, which helped a bit. My girlfriend was just relaxing a bit, saying it wasn't as bad as she thought, when we hit a little bit of turbulance. She screamed and the bloke across the aisle spat his dink over me laughing. Very plesent. Anyway we ahve flown to Lanzarote since then and the bigger plane and previous experience made it easier although still an obvious worry for her. Anyway she obviously agrees the benefits outweigh the safety fears as she is travelling the world with me. I think experience on planes can ease the worry, and hope the first several
hour flight does not put her off, as I get very sea-sick and its a long way back by boat.

My girlfriend, sadly, has far more expensive tastes than a mere vodka and orange. She also has quite a thirst on her. Perhaps I shall heed the warning and ply her with several large Tia Maria's (splash of coke) before take-off. At the very least it will be funny if she needs the loo, as I don't think she has walked on a plane thats flying yet. Still as you say her nerves may be calmed. I secretly like the excuse to hold her hand for the journey though.

As a person of a nervous disposition, anything which travels faster than 50 mph is a worry to me, therefore flying is not one of my favorite pastimes. However, having said this I agree that without it the world wouldn't be acessible to so many of us. Maybe, next time you fly you should consider giving your girlfriend the vodka and orange instead to calm her nerves!
