Advantages: Safe and regulated

Disadvantages: Money

Air travel at the moment is the safest form of transport with death rates falling every year through improved safety and better training for international pilots available through Western airlines.
Statistically the smaller commuter craft are ten times more likely to crash as the pilots tend to make more short cuts inviting the statistic that 9 out of 10 plane crashes are through human error along the chain of command rather than catastrophic mechanical failure.
The biggest and obvious risk to our safety up there is over crowding. The rule of thumb is that commercial aircraft should have a five mile separation when over land, and above a certain altitude. In reality when you look up ,the vapour trails are way to close as you glimpse the tint of sun from a metallic airliner not half a mile behind both taking advantage of smooth fuel saving following currents in smooth airspace.
Final approaches to our major airports have been cut to a one minute separation to cater for the low cost airlines that are filling our skies in pursuit of the profits. One day soon we all know that two big planes are going to whack into each other and no one is going to be prosecuted for a crime they no they are committing everyday of the week even now in the pursuit of profit over safety.
If the Air Traffic control is privatized then the need for costs to be cut will increase with bosses penciling in "exceptible deaths"to appease the city share holding institutions as the case is with Railtrack. One of the pluses of the regulation we have now is it works.
The powers that be kept Concorde flying knowing one day that there would be a disaster involving tyre burst ,it had happened 57 times.yes 57 times in its long distinguished service with five of the explosions peircing the fuel tank!.But the show must go on and in this business you have to hide the truth and keep the passengers faith in the miracle that is flying.
If you saw the Horizon programme on The Space Shu
ttle and how they let it take off, even though deep down the various contractors knew that it would blow up, as it was launched by politicians and money men,not the experts that were paid to make those decisions.
Next time you are out and about with a clear blue crisp sky latticed with vapour trails.Just see how close those guys are flying with each other.Let alone those crazy American pilots.
Still at least we are not flying on Eastern European Airlines at the mercy of their air traffic control.aghhhhhh.Safe as houses.
