Advantages: Look beautiful when finished!
Disadvantages: Can be difficult to do it!
I'm actually writing this for those girls who are loiving the new hair fashion, waves.
I have recently been loving Miley Cyrus' hair, the gorgeous waves she has which look so natural and bouncy, yet in other pictures her hair is poker straight, so I have been experimenting with making my own hair wavy.
My hair is naturally very sraight, and only needs a couple of minutes with the straighteners around my face and to reduce the frizz I get in my hair when it's been messy and knotted, but my hair tends to be flat and I find it very boring, but I can't get any volume into it usually, not even when it's been blow dryed, so I really wanted a new hairstyle, one which was simple, and wouldn't take me too long to do in the morning.
I started by using my straightners to curl my hair, to do this i simple sprayed on heat protection spray, and seperated into 3 sections, the lower hair whcih would have bigger curls, the middle section which would have smaller curls, and the top layer where the curls would be small and quite tight and defined.
This took me around an hour to get right, as hair then had to be seperated into 2 inch pieces and curled seperately, with around 20 seconds per curl in the heat. Then each curl needed to be sprayed with hair spray to keep it in place. Once my whole head had been done and I had nice loose curls underneath and tighter curls on the top, I could finally go out. But this took me as I said around an hour each time, and it could be hard to get it right. Sometimes parts of the hair just wouldn't curl, and after a few hours, they started to drop out.
I didn't want my hair to be properly curly (as in the picture), just wavy, so I then tried plaiting my hair before bed, in 3 big plaits through my hair, wetting or washing it before I did it. And then when I woke up my hair had natural waves to it, and I just had to add some definition to some parts with the straightners and spray with hairspray. But I found that the bottom parts of my hair where it's thinner, the waves were smaller and it didn't really look right. That is the perfect way to get natural waves if you have very thick hair, but for girls with thinner hair and especially girls with layers, the curls aren't consistent throughout the hair.
My final try was with curlers, you know the things you associate with your nana! Well those! I went out and bought myself a packet from Boots, which had 24 curlers inside, some big and some small, they were only £9 and come in a bag to keep them in. I chose the velcro variety rather than the ones which you have to clip in, as they're easier to put in by yourself!
Again I split the hair into 3 sections, and into 2 inch pieces, and in the bottom layers of the hair I put the bigger curlers, and gradually reduced them in size as I got towards the top of the head. I left my side fringe down, to be sorted out later on. Before Putting the curlers in, I washed my hair and towel dried it, spraying on leave in conditioner and lightly spraying hairspray onto the hair just before putting the curler into that piece of hair, rolling them tightly and any which needed securing just popping a clip in to hold it in place. When all my hair was up in the curlers, I then once again lightly sprayed my whole head with hairspray, not too much otherwise your hair will go hard and it will be difficult to get the curlers out!
You can do this either in the morning (if your going out that night and want your hair to be curly that evening), or overnight if you are having your hair like this every morning. If your going to be wearing them over night, I suggest buying the bedtime ones, which are softer and have foam inside to keep your head from been impaled by curlers while you sleep!
You could also try the curly ones, the ones you wrap the hair around, and then fold over (they come in different colours and look like those long foam things you have in the swimming pool!).
Whichever way you do it, the longer the curlers are left in the better they will work. Your hair needs time to dry under the curlers or your hair simply won't curl. At least they need around 3 hours to work, or around an hour if you have the heated curlers, but the longer you can leave them in the better, which is why it's good if you can leave them in over night!
When you take the curlers out and your hair is all curly, you may want to get some straightners or tongs, and curl the little bits which may have fallen down from the curlers over night or bits which may not have worked properly. Then spray with hairspray, to keep it all in place!
It takes a couple of times to get it perfect, and it can take you a good half an hour the first few times to put the curlers in, and you may find when your taking them out that some of them get tangled up, but don't worry, you'll get better at it as you keep doing it, it is much harder to do when your hair is long, especially if you have layers in your hair as they fall out of the curlers and tend to stick to the others. But it's all worth it when you see your beautiful curls!
Everybody is different, but if you want wavy curls, then in my own experience, curlers are the best option. If you have good straightners, then they can be a good way to curl your hair, but it can be difficult, and the amount of heat going through your hair could be dangerous for it!!!
Summary: Well worth the trouble! :)
