Advantages: a learning curve, ok if you can afford it, a paper qualification
Disadvantages: too much debt
Another of my writings about life in general from elsewhere, but I thought worth including here, particularly as we have just started the new semesters and term......... Gosh those were the days, the endless party's, constant daytime and pre lecture drinking, smoking strange aromatic foliage and tobacco, the endless swearing, deliberately missing lectures, endless appointments with the Dean of Faculty to explain the poor results, disrupting exams ...the constant sexual inuendo's and Adult Video parties....and that was just the lecturers..... ~~o0o~~ Seriously though Students are all labelled as free loaders, enjoying the life of Riley, living it up down the 'Biko Bar' or whatever else you've named your politically correct local Students Union watering hole, the constant parties, the socialising, cheap global travel and student discounts, everyone in your flat on a Sunday for the traditional joint ( and I'm not talking beef here !!)scratting to find the rent money, and the traditional weekly games ..dodging the landlord on rent day... .... ~~o0o~~ Very few folk however, stop to give real student life a thought, the constant stress of not only having to read around your many modules, buying the books, writing essays ( and I am not referring to a couple of sides of A4 here), meeting the deadlines, the dissertation, the exam preparations, waiting for the results to be posted, studying, group presentations, helping others..the social life, and on top of this theres the part time job..required by most hard up students, just to subsidise the Government pittance begrudgingly handed out to all students..sure there's the fun side... ~~o0o~~ What is the fun side ??? ... well theres the getting drunk to cope with the stress, theres the sexual contact usually happens because the drinking makes Godzilla or medallion man look that much more attractive, and theres the going to work bit
( usually having to suffer abuse as a waitress or barman until late at night for about £2.50 an hour), of course theres the daily interaction at lectures, that can be fun too, particularly if the lecturer is feeling the same way as the student is...ie tired, hung over, undervalued, totally cheesed off.. ~~o0o~~ So whats the point...well being a student is supposed to better prepare you for your later life, with more qualifications, higher education, and a better understanding of your fellow human beings through mutual experiencing of the crap that life can throw at you...and of course you come out with a degree that for most generally bears no resemblance to the qualifications needed to enhance your employability when you graduate from University... ~~o0o~~ Most students will also come out of University not only with a degree in something about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike but also a huge debt of around £5,000 to £10,000... Student life is for most folk a fun time, bear in mind it can also be a very intimidating and insular time, firt time away from home for most, first time handling big money ( whether or not in the form of an overdraft or via credit cards or student loans), there are many student organisations withing the Campus to help get you organised, and it will be time well spent getting yourself registered with a few student self help clubs, and the freshers week ..get there early get involved and get to know your area, you are going to be there for at least 3 years... ~~o0o~~ Most of all enjoy it, make the most of it, and good luck when you start in September or October...make the most of it as the thing I can remember about life at Bradford University and Bolton Institute...despite your feelings at the time it goes so quickly, I remember walking accross the car park after my graduation ceremony at Bradford thinking was that it? where did the 3 years go ???....so not only can i
t be the happiest day of your life..Graduating..it can also quite sad as you say your goodbyes promising of course to keep in touch with everyone, and you walk across the car park to the sound of your own footsteps, Uni Life is fun, make the most of it because it soon flies by, leaving you to enjoy the real world...enjoy......

kittykat18 - 30/10/01 To me it's not about the money or career (although obviously I hope a degree will help me with those!)-I actually like learning. |
