Advantages: Help you to grow up
Disadvantages: May cause a bit of thought
Well i have just finished my first year of my 3rd choice of university after my seemingly disappointing A level results i received around this time last summer and i am loving it! I had to start living away from home and it helped me to discover my independence and cooking skills.
Last year i didnt have time to celebrate my 18th birthday because i had continual exams, so my brother and my friends from Australia agreed to go out with me the day i got my results instead.
So i waited and the day of the exam results arrived, in order to get into my first choice i needed a BCC or better my second choice CCC minimum.
I ended up with a CCD the D was 4 marks off a C and the C was 5 marks of a B so the first two choices didn't except me, i was devastated. I even got a hug from the head mistress, which i think is ground braking because i know she has no idea who i was because she was only new that year.
Anyway i came home in a daze and my friends from Australia talked me through it and said that they didnt get accepted into their first choice either (they are a good 3-5 years older than myself) and that its all over now so i shouldn't think about it now and just relax. I closed myself in my room and just sat in a daze staring at the wall for a few hours.
Still in a daze, went to dinner with the family and Australian friends. I was told if i didnt want to go i didnt have to, i decided to go out anyway what did i have to loose?
My brother also invited some of his house mates.
I had a really good time and forgot about everything, was one of the most fun nights of my life because i had nothing left to worry about, i was still excepted into one of the universities, some people dont get in at all, so i considered myself lucky.
The next morning i looked at my third choice again it actually looked much more interesting than my first! I got a trip to Donegal Ardara in the first semester, in the fourth semester i get a trip to either Portugal or Tanzania.
It also occurred to me that i didn't want to use another year just trying to get in somewhere where i may struggle just to keep my scores up.
I know some people who are repeating their A levels for the second time and i know that it is not in my nature to look back.
I think everything happens for a reason in this sort of field and it is just up to yourself to see the silver lining and not get stuck in a rut.
It helps to just go out and have some fun clear your head and then give yourself a little time before deciding what you do, If you are still at school there is no need to rush into things.
I think the whole idea of pushing kids into university without reason isn't helping, the careers teachers generally give you the idea that if you don't go to university you are a failure which isn't true at all in fact most university degrees now a days wont lead you directly into a job.
Also sometimes the universities with lower grade entries have more interesting courses which may lead to jobs later in life, so it is always good to keep your options open and take your time.
Summary: Sometimes it is for the best
