Advantages: Control and discipline

Disadvantages: Over use is abusive

It may not be a popular opinion but I feel that corporal punishment is a means to discipline your child. I do not hold to the fact that it should be used all ther time however. If a child is about to do something that could severlly injure or harm them then I, as a parent, would rather they recieved a smack. Also if they have hurt someone physically they need to know that there is an equivilent punishment. I am a teacher and a parent and see children who are not under the control on there primary carers, (sorry for the PC) and they tend to be the disruptive influence in the classroom.
I have also been at the recieving end of child empowerment in the classroom. I was accussed of threatening them with a hand gesture and was ask to leave for the sake of the child. I was put under investigation as was proved wholely innocent, but I was still unable to return to the school. This child had a history of bad and disruptive behaviour and had parent who felt physical puniment was not good for the child. For crying out load, they cant see what harm they are doing.
Although its not a wholely new idea parent are made out to be criminals if the use a form of corporal punishment. Well I was brought up with this discipline as were a great many of my peer group. It does not and will not make you an habitual criminal. Parent should be allowed to make informed decisions with the correct facts, and without the PC hype. Over use is abuse but meeted out correctly is can be used to correct bad behaviour.

Good opinion. Kids have to know right from wrong and if they will not listen (like most don't) some sort of discipline has to be given, if not, they will think they can get away with anything.

It is true violence breeds violence; but there is a long way between child abuse and a light slap if your toddler has it's hands in plug socket! Thanks for a balanced view.
