This is a very controversial topic and it is hard to say. Obviously it depends from child to child. But if I look back and see how my parents brought me up I think that this was the right way.

To my mind one should be quite strict with children they should know from the beginning that there are boundaries - things they can do and things that they are not allowed doing. If the child misbehaves it should be punished. Well hitting a child is not the only existing punishment therefore one should think of an effective and fair punishment.

Besides children should be occupied with work -they should participate in sport, play instruments and have hobbies. I would restrict TV and computer to a minimum as this is a bad influence for children.

If a child is being punished for doing something wrong it should be awarded for doing something the right way. Give the child some work to do and then let it enjoy the good consequences. Children should not dominate the parents and get everything they want. One particular thing I learned is that children should not receive pocket money. They should work for their own money. When they are younger they won't need their own money anyway so there should be no problem but as soon as they are able to do some part time job they should do so. Not only do they start to respect money, they realise it is not so easy to have everything and they will be more careful with things they bought themselves and things they have received from others. Spoiling a kid just because a family is wealthier is not the right way. I have worked (delivered newspapers) since I was 14 and I could effort to buy things with my own money.

One should always support and guide the child -but it is easier to say all that than putting it into practice. There are a lot of things that could distract the parents such as work, which results in less time being spent with their child. And the best thing to occupy a child while being busy is to allow him or her to watch TV or sit in front of the computer. Possibly it is harder to bring up children than it was a few years ago. People were more religious, there was more time for family and fewer distractions.

Summary: It is a hard job

Besides I am a swimming instructor and I have and still am teaching children as young as 3 - ok that is a hassle for the parent to drive the kid to the leisure centre and then wait there. But at least the kids can let out their energy and will be much calmer at home
