Advantages: only as last resort
Disadvantages: doesn't achieve anything
It's an interesting subject and equally so to read others opinions. I don't smack my children unless it's the last resort, and that's very very rarely. I have developed my mothers technique which I always found scary, perhaps it's in the genes. And it's 'the look'. My mother only had to glare at us and we sat down and kept quiet. My son(my daughter is still a baby so not too naughty as yet) knows when he has pushed his luck by my look and the tone of my voice. When he became unbearable I left the room and counted to 10. If I didn't I found I was having a tantrum too, well an adult version of one. If I shouted he shouted more, it became a competition as to who would win. He hated my silence and wanted to know what was wrong. He would say ' well aren't you going to say anything?' and if I said 'no' there wasn't a lot he could say back. We would normally end up laughing at each other. I became more irate if we out, people always stare at mums if they shout or smack. So I used to point out to him that people were staring at him because he was being so naughty and embarrassiing every one, and wouldn't he be equally embarrassed if I were to smack him. He agreed on this one...... I think if you grow up seeing CP as the norm then you will do the same with your children. I know someone who tells her children off one minute, then hugs them the next because she feels guilty for punishing them, then another time she can be really nasty and shout, scream and pull them. I'm getting mixed messages from watching so what are the children getting? Discipline isn't only about smacking, it's about general behaviour, manners and respect. It's a hard job but parents have to be consistent so children know the rules. I was afraid of my mother and the endless broken hairbrushes which caught us on the back of the legs. I felt more admonished from the
look than the hairbrush!
