Advantages: If You Can Control Your Kids With Yours Hands Not A Fist, Then You've Done Your Job

Disadvantages: Smacking Might Shut Them Up Now, But In The Long Run...

For you to understand my thoughts on this issue, I want you to read two poems. Sometimes, I can only express my thoughts this way. I've made them relevant, so in my eyes they still constitute an opinion.

AS A CHILD
What ever happened my childhood?
The golden age of youth
When the world was one giant saftey net
And hate exsisted only in comic books

What ever happened to innocence?
Presuming the best of life
The frighting logical way of thinking
That suited my simple and easy life

What ever happened to wonder?
The fear of the monster beneath the bed
The notions of magic and super powers
Having the worlds strongest Dad

What ever happened to learning?
Approaching with a mind blank and free
The days before preconceptions
The real world content without me

Finally I ask of freedom
The old friend I remember in only my dreams
All before advertising and fashion and hype
Stole my chance to be truly free

If only we were all still children
And in our hearts we still found a song
Where war and famine and racism
Were unconceable, unjustifable and wrong

With this poem in mind I ask you to consider the next

WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND
Bear in mind as you show your fist
How you yourself began this trip
And recall the fear in your heart
When the world you loved fell apart

Hit my face or slap my bum
Ethier way the damage is done
As a child I can only look to you
My foremost teacher, my bearer of truth

Teach me now while you're still right
The only solution is to fight
And forever shall it embed in my brain
That to hit a child or my wife is sane

To show me life is all a fight
Is to cheat me of the childhood right
To live at least a decade of my time
Ignoring the truth of my inevitable decline

Set the example of diplomacy and care
Ta
ke from me my teddy bear
But never raise to me a fist and show
The world of hate I'm yet to know

If we bring our children up in a place where the hate and violence in the real world doesn't exist, our children will see clearly what is right and wrong. Give them an exception to the darkness out there and don't smack - let them keep their innocence just a little bit longer.

Excellent op. As I've mentioned in my own op on the subject, I DO smack my kids but only when they decide to try and run under a bus and have ignored ALL my other attempts to stop them. Better that than being squished or deaded.
