Advantages: only option sometimes
Disadvantages: makes me feel guilty
I have a 2 year old son. He is KING of tantrums. Screaming till he goes purple in the face and the sweat is pouring from him, kicking and rolling around on the floor, slapping people, generally being a litle you-know-what! I also have an 8 month old baby, so I have found that the first thing I have to do is get him out of the way, (so that she doesn't get kicked or rolled on, it has happened) usually into his bedroom, where I will leave him to scream and roll around until he calms down. Most of the time this works, he will call me when he is ready to behave, and usually say sorry, and want a cuddle. We then have a chat, and I explain what he has done wrong, and why he shouldn't do it again. He normally does what I ask (unless he is very tired!). Sometimes this approach is totally useless (when he is tired), and all I get is shouting and a very angry little boy running around the house screaming. This is when I smack, not a hard smack, usually on the back of his hand. It is a shock because it rarely happens, and calms him down a bit, then he goes into his room for a while until he clams down properly. I always feel guilty for smacking him. He is so small and I am so big (compared to him!). Also I was smacked as a child, far more than I would ever smack my child, and for, in my opinion, the wrong reasons. I ended up resenting, and generally not repecting my parents, for this and a few other reasons. I do not want this to happen with my kids. Smacking works for some and not for others. i do not believe it should be outlawed, it is a matter of personal choice, as long as it is not taken too far.

azazel - 21/04/01 i personally do not agree with smacking a child. though i'm not a parent myself so i haven't been in the situation. my father smacked me when i was a wee boy of 6, just the once, and i've never forgiven him for it since, and i'm 21 now. so it definately does stay with you.
