Advantages: Different ways if discipline

Disadvantages: none

Having being brought up on the basis that if i did something bad i would get a smack, i do not think there is anything wrong with smacking your child if they have done something deserving of a smack. Some people may disagree on what is deserving of a smack, some may say that nothing is deserving of a smack. As a child if i threw a tantrum i would usually get a smacked bum or hand, this was the smallest thing i would get a smack for, usually. However as time has passed the new wave of mums are beginning to take the vein of thought that smacking their child is not the way to discipline them, this is for them to decide and if they have a better way for disciplining their child then good for them, but what works for one child may not work for another child. There are many ways of disciplining a child and as my mum was a child minder i have witnessed many through the years.

As i have said there is the somewhat orthodox but old fashioned smacking, the way in which i was brought up in. Being smacked deterred me from doing things that i knew i should not be doing. Some people say that it may have a lasting effect on the child, but i can honestly say it has not affected me.

Some people prefer to discipline their children by sending them to their room for them to cool down, and telling them they can come down when they are cool. This tactic is much the same as grounding your child, or taking away a toy for example.

Another example is the reward system. Some parents prefer to reward good behaviour rather than punish bad behaviour. This works by setting up a system where your child receives say a gold star for good behaviour, or a day free of bad behaviour, and lose a star for bad behaviour. Then when a certain amount of stars are reached the child will receive some sort of reward.

When all said and done people can criticise other people for the way they discipline their child, but only the child's parents have to live with them 24/7, an
d only they know what does and doesn't work for disciplining their child. So i believe it is up to the parent how they discipline their child, and people should, unless extreme, let the parent discipline their child how they please.
What adds to my belief in this is a story i read in the paper not too long ago. A french man on holiday in the UK with his son, was seen smacking his child in a restaurant. Someone phoned the police and the man was arrested and putting in a cell. This left the boy, who could not speak a word of English, alone in a strange hospital in a strange country, having his trousers taken down and examined. Surely this will have caused the child much more distress then a small smack. The boy was without his dad for 2 days until they were re-united when the man was allowed to return to France. Surely the boy experienced much much more distress through this, and this would not have happened if the man was allowed to discipline his child how he chose most fitting.
