It's an undeniable fact that imprisoning Pat Amos for the persistent truancy of her two daughters was an unmitigated success.

It's the clearest sign yet that the Government is finally getting to grips with stopping the rot of future generations bringing up children with the same disregard for authority.

The suitably chastened little minxes dutifully traipsed off to their school safe in the knowledge that, if they didn't, mumsy would be back peeing in a bucket before you could say "education, education, education".

Meanwhile, school suspensions for unruly behaviour have reached an all-time high and yesterday a blacklist of the country's 78 most violent and disruptive pupils was published. Perhaps it's time for the boys in blue to feel the collar of their parents too?

Hope springs eternal, but in the meantime, one more thought on the excellent initiative that saw Pat Amos imprisoned and threatens other mothers of persistent truants.
