Advantages: My Story
Disadvantages: Painful truth
I was always smacked as a child.... "A bit of discipline never hurt anyone my mother would say". To which I say unfortunatly that is incorrect. I remember being hit for being naughty or whatever. Back of a sliper was always the worst. I can remember getting bruises and most of all feeling scared. I used to regulary hide when my parents came in from work. Under the bed, in the wardrobe. It didn't matter, hidding was better than getting beaten. My brother also had it quite bad, we used to hide together holding eachother's hands. We always used to stay out late and wait for our parents to go out or go to bed. Of course sometimes for weeks the violence would stop, we'd be happy and forget about the bruises. But it would never last for long. When I was 16 I tried running away from home. Sadly it wasn't the answer (see my story - Leave Beggers Be in the homelessness section for more information). I had to come back one day. Eventually as me and my brother got older the punishment got less and now has stopped. However I will never forget those times, feeling alnoe, afraid and scared of when the next smack would come from. It is because of the childhood I had that I will never treat my children the same way. I believe that rules must be stuck to, but I will never punish my kids with violence, there is always another way. My heart goes out to everybody who has experineced phsyical beatings as a child and just remember tell somebody if it gets too bad, a teacher, friends or even other relative. Thankyou for reading - don't hit children.

geordieger - 13/06/02 Totally agree, mate. I have never, ever smacked my girls, even though they sometimes drive me up the wall. Brilliant op. :-)
