Advantages: discipline?
Disadvantages: pain, anger, embarassment
I first have to admit that I'm not speaking from the experience of a parents point of view; but I can definitely speak from the perspective of a child. HOW I GREW UP: Discipline, discipline, discipline! Whack! Whack! You shouldn't do that; Wait 'til your father gets home. This is going to hurt me a lot more than it hurts you (I DON'T THINK SO!!). Bend over boy, six of the best. Although at school it was taken as a mark of respect as to how many you could take before passing out. Livid welts that would live with you for hours, and obviously make sitting somewhat uncomfortable. But the point is that you do live with it - and although you'll swear revenge to anyone who will listen, we do, the vast majority, grow out of it. The question must be, has punishment done us any harm, and/or have we learned from it. I know, and I can only speak for myself, that I have. I have learned that it is wrong to beat children in order for them to learn, but by the same token, learning discipline, in some form or other, is of paramount importance to adult/grown-up development. The form that discipline takes depends on the child, the parent and perhaps a teacher. I know that I am appalled whenever I see a parent smacking a child simply because they are crying. (I'LL GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT!) I do know how difficult they can be sometimes - but lets try and remember that we were children once, and not repeat the mistakes of our parents and teachers. Words and looks can go a long way as well.
