Oh how I have missed doing these discussions! They used to be very thought provoking for me to look at and today I have come across yet another juicy one - disciplining children. Right first things first, I was not smacked as a kid and I do not ever remember my parents even threatening me with a smack. However I do think though that some people may well need to be taught in some manner. What that manner is, I don't know. All I do know is that it is not up to the government to tell parents how to bring up a child.

Right let me begin by saying I have no children at the moment and I am very happy with that fact. I also hope I do not have any kids for a few more years because let's face it too many people are going out there and getting pregnant without thinking about it. A little off the point I know, but the point I am trying to make is that those who have thought about having a child should also have thought about how they will bring it up. And that is where the problem starts.

Too many people are saying to parents that they have to be perfect and putting them under a whole load of pressure. And then this leads to the parents becoming even more distressed, thus leading to problems. We should be asking parents hows they are coping and all the rest of it because the fact is they have a kid and they have to bring it up well, otherwise we have another delinquent on the street. Parents really have to take some control over their kids these days because they are becoming more and more out of control because the parents are losing control. How do they get this control back? By smacking?

I do think that it is right that teachers can't hit kids anymore because as far as I am concerned teachers mean nothing to the kids, so why should they be given that right? Fair enough kids go school, but that does not mean that someone who they will only know for a yr should have the right to inflict pain on them. I also think that schools do not need
to worry about doing this because at the end of the day the kids mean nothing to them. They are just doing their job and then should just leave it there. They should, however tell authorities if kids are misbehaving because I do think that it is very important for them to know how kids are behaving.

So the place where I think discipline should be taught - home. Parents of today need to sort themselves out because they are easily getting frustrated and losing control. I do think they should be allowed to smack their kids, but I do think that some kids don't need smacking. People like me are ones who like listening and I tell you this, when I was younger I also listened because I never wanted to annoy my parents. Hence I would resolve my problem without having to make a big deal. So some kids are sure to be like me - problem is how do you distinguish between trouble-makers and those who are just wanting to be heard.
