Advantages: None that I can think of

Disadvantages: Teaches violence

When I was growing up smacking was quite normal. I can remember one of my friends and she used to get smacked with the back of a hairbrush. I was horrified to say the least, as it was something I had never experienced. I can honestly say I can’t remember smacking ever happening in my home. I was threatened, with all the stuff on my bedroom floor being thrown in the rubbish if I didn’t clear it up.

I have a two-year-old daughter who at the moment is going through the terrible two’s. She gets so frustrated and does on occasion hit me. I tend to put her in a room on her own rather than smack. I feel that if I were to smack her she wouldn’t be able to understand why it’s okay for Mummy to smack and not for her.

I don’t agree with smacking at school either, I feel we are opening up our children to violence and I don’t feel there is a need for that. I can remember when I was in junior school, getting smacked on the hand with a ruler for something I had done wrong. When I went to senior school I was petrified of the slipper. The girls got the slipper and the boys got the cane. Just the thought of that was enough for me, maybe that was because I wasn’t used to that kind of punishment.

I do feel that these days there is no respect from children. And I really don’t know the answer to that, although I do feel that smacking is not the answer.

exactly, but what an incredibly difficult thing - knowing exactly how to right wrong behaviour from children to stop them from doing bad without using CP
