is racism always bad? (I'm Not Racist But...)

Did the events this past week make me wish I had listened to that old man in the pub who said 'never to trust a coloured person'? No they didn't, the views of the stereotypical racist are usually based on ignorance and not much else. However I do feel that now is a time when the British as a race should look upon all Islamic fundamentalists as possible terrorists. Would that be racist?

Technically it probably would be but would it be an 'evil' form of racism? I don't think so. It is simply protecting your nation from possible harm. During WW2 the Americans put all Chinese/Japanese-Americans in detainment camps, Many would call this racist but just as many would argue that it was essential for national security.

My problem with the word racism today is that it is hyped up to be one of the worst crimes known to man and that any racism is evil. Racist jokes are looked down on yet when you look at some of the 1980's classic comedy it is filled with racist jokes, e.g Trading places. Can telling a racist joke mean you are a racist? is Dan Akroyd a racist? Of course not, racism is a valid source for humour in the same way that religion, politics and sex are all sources of humour.

Today I have commited the following 'racist atrocities' - Whilst driving past a Mosque I looked at those muslims outside and viewed them all as potential terrorists, I told a racist joke to one of my friends, locked my car door when stopped next to a group of black youths and then went home to my house that has a Union Jack and a star spangled banner in the porch.

Am I a racist?

I don't think so, I have friends and colleagues of all races and treat them no differently based on the colour of their skin, nationality or religious beliefs.

I believe that the time has come for this country to be a little bit more racist towards certain races (for our country's safety) and for the politically correct among
st us to stop talking about racism as 'the worst evil'
