Internet surfing……. Better than Keeping Tropical Fish.



Can you really class it as a hobby? Let me think. It’s something that you spend a lot of time on and you do take a genuine interest in it, so the answer must be yes. I would never keep tropical fish again, why should I when I have people and information from all over the world within the confines of the little square box that is my computer…So my hobby, what does it give me…

The Worldwide Web………

Everything you ever want to know about is out there on a www. something, just ask Auldmac or JanHarper, they have been everywhere on the web! I remember one night we had a friend visiting, yes I do have friends ok. Anyway he was raving about this video he had got out, he couldn’t remember the name of the video but he knew the actor and he knew it was about golf. Over to my friend in the corner, type the actors name in the search engine and wham, had the full list of which films he had been in. And there it was, a golfing comedy…Handy or what? My kids also use it for school projects and I use it for golf statistics and other things…

The Chat………….

Now believe it or not I have been known to be found in the odd chatroom (I can hear the gasps of shock from you all), although not as much as I used to when it was a novelty to me. I enjoy the fun and the friends you can meet on the chat. Which chat do you pick? There are so many, Yahoo, Lycos, Icq, MSN and of course our very own Dooyoo chatroom. Even if you are not so keen on the Chat yourself you do have to admit what an amazing thing it is. You are sitting in your room in the UK and you are having an instant conversation to people from India, America, Spain and other parts of the world. I use it the odd time now and only really to talk to someone who gives me an interesting conversation and not the fact that they are into bondage
or asking ‘do you like Indian men?’!!

Email……………

I have to admit that I love receiving email from friends I have made on the net. My friend Sharon who I mentioned in an earlier opinion used to email me every other hour and to be honest, ok this may sound sad, but I loved it. I love the interaction and the fun you have with sending and receiving email. The fact that if you have a friend in England or America, all you have to do is type out your email, press a button and it’s instantly sent and received at the other end. This never fails to impress me and I think a lot of us now take it for granted. You can also send pictures via your email and again this is handy if you are sending Christmas or Holiday snaps to relatives’ abroad. Email is one of my personal favourite things related to Internet surfing….You can have numerous email accounts. There is Hotmail, Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, NTL and so many more. I have one with Hotmail and one with Yahoo. It’s handy to have the two as you would usually find that some nights it can be very difficult to get into either Yahoo or Hotmail, so it’s best having a second option.

Downloading…………… ..

Now this is another good thing that surfing brings you, the ability to download things. You can take your pick from downloading your favourite song to downloading song lyrics, album covers, screensavers, PC utilities and almost anything else you can think of. One thing I should point out, make sure you have a damn good virus checker before you download because it’s quite easy to pick up a nasty virus through downloading.

Conclusion……………

You also have Dooyoo of course which has become my addiction for the last 3 months (and please don’t come back on the word addiction, I am just meaning it in a humorous way). So would I recommend Internet Surfi
ng as a hobby, well, apart from the fact that your back is always sore and your eyes are sore and you sometimes don’t get to bed until late, then yes I do. It is full of more nice people than many non-surfers think and I have met lots of interesting people who I enjoy keeping in touch with…. Just be wary though of those weird types on the net, the type that always mention women in their opinions, the ones that make chatrooms an unsafe place for a nice girl to go. These sort of people give the Internet a bad name and I am just glad that the majority of people online are nice and caring like myself…….
