Advantages: so much to do, meet new people, keep in touch with old friends
Disadvantages: becomes addictive
Surfing the internet is fastly becoming the main hobby of a large number of people. It's easy to see why - it's what I would class as my major hobby, and it's highly addictive. There's something about being online, even if you are just going to the same sites every day, checking for updates and gathering news, that is highly entertaining and it can be very hard at times to switch off. Perhaps it's the wide range of information that is available that makes it so difficult to switch off. The internet contains information about just about everything you would want to know about. Why, type in some obscure phrase like "chestnuts" into a search engine and you're bound to be returned hundreds if not thousands of results. There is just so much to do on the internet. It's the perfect place to keep up to date with the latest goings on both in the world at large, and in a smaller community such as your football team of music group. It provides a means of sharing information as a group and you have access to sources of information that you would not ever have found. Then, there's the wide variety of websites around the internet. You've got your informative websites, such as news and sports pages, but then there are advertising websites such as the page of you're favourite TV show, down to entertainment pages such as jokes or humour. There's so much to do online, you can chat online to your friends and keep in touch with people you no longer see. You can take part in discussion groups about subjects of interest to you, or you can meet new friends through chat rooms or instant messenger. Furthermore, websites are updated regularly so there's always that buzz about coming back frequently so as not to miss the latest information. And, sooner rather than later, we'll get the urge to design our own page and we'll spend hours pouring over HTML websites, trying to des
ign the best site on the net. No matter what you use the internet for - you'll find it difficult to switch off.

- 28/12/01 I wish I could spend 2-5 hours on the net each day! I have a young child who won't let me spend more than a few minutes at a time on it without interupting me and a husband who thinks the internet is a waste of time. I must admit to having been really addicted to it until recently but I have just spend 4 days without using it at all - hurrah! Not going to let it go completely though as I agree with everything you have said in this op. It is a very entertaining, educational and rewarding hobby. |

- 28/12/01 I have only recently found dooyoo after a friend recommended it - before that I found the internet boring & could never find a decent site to look at. I usually spend abour 3-5 hours on the internet while at work (due to us not launching till early 2002) & never do I find a decent site - Till this one! Love it! |
