Advantages: Great financial reward, medical experts on hand, immense physical conditioning
Disadvantages: accidents can happen
Boxing is a gentleman’s sport that has been practised for many years from the grim northern gyms to the glittery delights of Las Vegas. In recent times there have been countless life threatening injuries incurred by some of the participants. In turn this makes people question the validity of the sport. It’s the same stale points every time in my opinion. This is all about two men using their fists in a ring to gain the upper hand and score points. However one man can quickly turn the momentum of a bout by scoring a knock out his opponent. These fights aren’t conducted using bare fists, instead the fighter wear gloves but that doesn’t really soften the blow much. Yes it has to hurt and there are dangers but I have some news for you all. We face danger in every waking day of our life. You could be walking the streets one day not aware of the maniac driver around the corner. But we know that, nothing is certain but we are aware. That’s my point, these fighters know that there is also the chance that the moment they step in the ring may be their last living moment. However they can be safe in the knowledge that the highest medical attention will be close at hand to give them a fighting chance. Their bodies have gone through intensive training regimes and are conditioned for the task ahead. They are prepared in order to minimize the risk. Of course they don’t just fight for the fun of it, the sport is incredibly rewarding on a financial level if you make the grade. In a lot of sports there are risks involved in order to be the best. Racing Drivers put themselves in more danger than boxers. They are at the mercy of a lot of elements that can only be controlled up to a certain point. They can’t throw in the towel but hurtling around s racetrack at break neck speed. Yet no one really questions the death or tragedy in racing, it’s taken for granted because it’s not seen as a psychical sport by
the majority even though it is. The accidents in boxing aren’t a huge thing; there are hundreds of bouts a year in many different weight levels with no problems. We only hear the bad points. I’m no huge boxing fan but I know that the sport is taken very seriously by the people involved and safety is a high priority. They want to protect their sport as a high money earner and any bad publicity would harm that. Some boxers don’t pull through but there are many that have thanks to great medical attention. Look at this way, without any safety precautions and care then this wouldn’t really be any different to cockfighting. Of course without the cocks.
