~ ~ An old saw of the criminal classes when they were locked away as a result of their multifarious illegal activities is “If you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime”. A more up to date version would probably read “Do the crime anyway, as you won’t get any time!” ~ ~ As I see it one of the main problems with the criminal justice system here in the Republic of Ireland today is that the criminal classes realise that the chances are high that even if they commit a fairly serious offence the chances are they will do very little (if any at all!) actual jail time as a consequence. ~ ~ Some recent judgements beggar belief.
