Is Eastern European immigration taking our jobs?

Migration could be a good thing, in short term resources of councils and schools are stretched and of course the wages are going down in factories and manual jobs. Only the rich and well off benefit with cheap labour as child minders plumbers and other skilled trades. It is very common of immigrant workers to drop prices but once they are established prices go up again. Media has an image of hardworking East European workers. This I agree with. New comers to any country work hard to make money. Calling people of this country lazy may also be true, we have to realise though that people of this country don't have any cho... more

Yes and not only our jobs. Married couples are sending their kids to schools, since these kids don't speak english more of classroom resources are spent on non speakers and education standard is slipping amongst primary age groups. Its not JUST because the Eastern Europeans are taking the lower paid jobs that the English don’t want them to do so any more, it is because there are TOO MANY of them taking those "unskilled" jobs. We also have a class of workers who have few skills and rely on unskilled labour vacancies. We also have a working class, we aren’t ALL educated and working in law firms. These days the Englishman cannot lie in bed while the government provides - unless one has half a dozen babies crawling around the front room because the government does not pay our grocery bills. They may give us hand out for a roof over our heads but that is where it ends - unless of ...  Read the complete review

The politicians of all parties tell us that immigration is good for the economy but they fail to tell us about the social chaos that population growth of this enormity will lead to. The most obvious problem is housing. Housing is already in such great demand ( whether for buying or renting) that the house prices are already beyond the scope of most first time buyers, and rents due to demand are so high that it makes it almost impossible to rent and save at the same ...  Read the complete review

Migration from former Eastern Bloc is very positive. Polish plumbers, dentists etc have done a wonderful job so far. Building and plumbing industry has improved because people coming in have better skills than British workforce, therefore they make better employees and because most of them are cheap labour people who use them save money. Any money these people make goes back to their country and help their families. Some job these people do won't be touched by our people so they are filling a gap. I think work migration from European countries is good. It makes Europe stronger. Countries share skills and learn from each other. Poorer ...  Read the complete review

~ ~ Is Eastern European immigration taking our jobs? Well, I can’t really speak for the UK any more, as it’s close on 30 years since I lived there, but certainly here in the Republic of Ireland the answer is a resounding yes. And thank God they are, or else our much vaunted “Celtic Tiger” economy would not be roaring half as loudly! ~ ~ Since around the beginning of the 1990’s, Ireland has been experiencing an economic boom period that has brought prosperity to the nation and its people on an almost unprecedented scale, to the extent that Irish workers are now amongst the best paid in the world. Much of this economic growth has been brought about by our ...  Read the complete review
