A complicated way to loose money without having fun. (Is it worth playing the lottery?)

Advantages: If you buy other stuff when you go for the ticket it will be good for the economy.

Disadvantages: Cost, effort, tedium.

If I was going to gamble for entertainment I certainly wouldn't queue up for a ticket then go home and watch the results on TV, you can do that anyway, it's not fun.
There are plenty of online casinos with more engaging, better odds games such as poker on which you can easily turn a guaranteed profit while enjoying yourself by collecting cash back from sites like we promise to.
Surely for gambling to be fun there has to be an ambience and a series of wins and looses to keep the adrenaline up?
Lottery claims to be tax free, this isn't true as you pay 50% up front leading to an instant waste of half of your money as this much isn't contributed to the prize pot.
The distribution of winnings is very inequitable so even a 50p loss is considered a success compared to the modal average.
The averages are slightly better gambling on the Irish lottery results in a betting shop.
The process of buying tickets is now very complicated with loads of different types of draw so even if I wanted to buy in I wouldn't know how.
I suspect a sequence such as 10 X table might perform better than average as you are unlikely to have to share any winnings. I suspect some people do play numbers 1-6 so I would go for a clear but less obvious pattern. I would also suggest avoiding numbers which could be dates e.g. playing 04/12/87.
It is worth registering for lottery online for small, easy cash back from rpoints or similar.

Summary: You don't make money and you don't enjoy playing.
