I believe this one depend on the individual and the reason why you went to college in the first place. Personally I would start with why I even bothered to go to college .After going through primary, secondary and high school, and then the next logical thing to do was to go to the university. That was my thinking going into college. To continue my education. What would the education bring to me at the end? Help me get a better job and make me a better person.

College itself was tough, not the school work, that part only gets difficult if you decide to do all the wrong things. Like skip classes, skip homework assignments and in some cases skip some of the finals examinations. But you do all of the above on a regular basis and the college years would go bye with less pain.

Mine was difficult because I had to pay for it. That means holding down a full time job while carrying a full time semester worth of courses. It means making it to class in such a sorry state; you could barely stay awake through some of the courses. But you know what? I stuck it out and after about 5 years or so, got my degree in accounting (BA). It normally should take you 4 years to do it but I had to stay out a couple of semester to make some money.

Was the degree worth all the effort? Tough question. In terms of whether it gets you a job in your field of study I would have to say no. Employers are most of the time looking for people with experiences in the position that they are looking to fill. If you have the experience in what they are looking for, then the degree is a big plus. You would get picked up right away. If you just went to college, did no internship, worked in a different field throughout your college life then it becomes extremely difficult for you to break in with your higher qualification? You go to interviews and you would be complemented for your college degree but without the job experience you would not get the job.

So what do you do with the college degree? You keep it aside and just continue doing what you did while in college. I was an electronics salesmen and I just continued working in sales. I move around into various sales jobs and did not have any problems getting hired. The college education comes in handy in how you handle different situations in life. You do not easily give up just because things get tough and most of the time you would make sounder decisions.

So to conclude I would say that my college degree is worth more than the piece of paper that it is written on.

Summary: Really depends on the individual

Shame young people have to take out student loans to pay for their degree. When I was young I was fortunate to get a grant, so my degree cost me nothing but time. Great article by the way. 'N'.

My husband has a first class honours degree in IT for which he worked VERY hard as a part time student whilst working. He now owns his own company as an IT consultant so it was worth it for him, Susan
