northerner northerner there is no where near as much passion and committment in the italian game. it has flair, but not enough drive, which is why its viewing audineces are so few compared to the premiership 05/07/01
ben_83 ben_83 As I said in my commentary, Italy has just as much passion and loads more flair and skill than England. Surely this makes it a better prospect? 14/05/01
northerner northerner at the end of the day, the italian game hasn't got what people want to watch. where the english game excels is that it has a balance of hard tackling and passion, along with flair and skill. no european league has the right balance that england has

ben_83 ben_83 Whether the Italian national team played boring football or not is a matter of opinion but you have to admit that players like Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero are exciting to watch.

I think INA your face brought it to your attention that Totti's dispute with the club was not just about massages. Besides, Butt couldn't abandon the United cause if he wanted to because no one would take him.

Fair point about Simon Schama. I suppose it goes to show that football, like television, is all a matter of taste.

northerner northerner the italian team may have got to the finals, but they did do playing the most boring football of the tournament.

i'm not sure you'll ever find nicky butt abandoning the red cause because of a dispute over massages

Simon Schama's History of Britain is boring to your ordinary punter, and woefully simplistic for any knowledgable historian. and cornonation street is more entertaining than the histroy guy, even if it isn't of the same elitist, stuck-up, self-righteous nature. which is pretty much my point about the english game

northerner northerner sorry lads but we all have our own points of view, and you're both entitled to yours, although me, and most of the world would disagree with you 07/05/01
INA+your+face INA your face Your opinion made a fair point about Italy being for purists but there is nothing wrong with that. I do think on the other hand that it is becoming more accessable to people like you who prefer fast action. Juventus although brilliantly skillful generally haven't been very exciting to watch but this season Roma haved played high tempo, attacking football yet still managing to play to a very high standard. Other exciting teams to watch out for are Lazio, Fiorentina, Perugia and Parma amoungst others. I urge you to have a look in whenever Football Italia's on because otherwise you might miss a thriller like Brescia 2-4 Roma, Lazio 4-1 Juventus or Inter 2-2 Milan which were all great matches that anyone would enjoy.

I'd just like to set you straight about Totti's fall out with the club. He had a dispute about a few contract details, one of which being his physical trainer, but the reason he didn't play against Liverpool was because he was injured. Also the only reason Roma weren't as good against Liverpool as they've been all season was because the manager and players had more important things to focus on, namely winning their first Scudetto in 18 years. Oh and by the way I agree with ben83, he's probably one of the most committed players in the world. He's been supporting Roma since he was a young boy.

There was a lot more I could have commented on but ben83 seems to have covered everything.

ben_83 ben_83 Some of your points, such as the one about diving, are totally valid. However, some of them betray your lack of understanding and knowledge of Italian football.

Yes, the foreigners in Italy are the best in the world but the home-grown players are also the best of the three top European leagues. How can you say that 'the home grown Italian players won?t have you giving up Sunday lunch to watch Channel 4' when the Italian national side got to the final of Euro 2000 and sports some of the best players in the world in Totti, Nesta, Vieri, Maldini, etc.?

You accuse Italian sides of 'buying in entire squads' which is a fair point when talking about Inter or Lazio as is your point about Man Utd and Liverpool's home-grown players. However, there are Italian clubs such as Roma, Juventus or Parma whose backbones are made of Italian players just as there are English clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea) that are almost entirely made up of what could only be described as mercenaries. As for saying 'there?s no passion watching Franny Totti play', this is merely wrong. Totti is just as devoted, if not more, to Roma as Scholes or Butt are to Man Utd. And for someone who prides himself on being so right-on, calling Italian players 'gutless wendy-band wearing fairies' simply because of their haircuts doesn't seem very enlightened.

Italian football does appeal to purists but what's wrong with that? I can appreciate fast, attacking football but I'd much rather watch the Spanish league instead of the English because the players are better and one team doesn't dominate. And so what if more people around the world watch English football on television over Italian? Would you argue that 'EastEnders' or 'Coronation Street' were higher quality television programmes than 'Simon Schama's History of Britain' simply because they get higher viewing figures?

Yes, Man Utd have an excellent youth system and don't often need to buy in talent but how many other clubs are providing England with such a rich crop of talent? When you look at the Italian and, to a lesser extent, Spanish leagues as wholes, you'll see that youth development is a lot better elsewhere in Europe. Just look at their respective Under 21 sides. Italy are European champions and arguably the best in the world and Spain recently drubbed England 4-0 away. As for your Champions League hopes, anyone who wants a team who isn't Real Madrid to win isn't a football fan - they are the best team in the world by a long way.

'Increasingly players are being attracted to the premiership'. Are they? Do you think the hottest young properties in world football such as Riquelme, Saviola, Adriano, etc. will come to England when they inevitably move to a big European club? I doubt it.

You use Zidane and Vieri as examples of Italian based players lacking commitment and this is totally correct in those two cases. However, there are many very commited players (Nesta, Totti, Maldini, Costacurta, Ferrara, etc.) in Italy and no fewer mercenaries (Pires, Hasselbaink, etc.) plying their trade in England.

Finally, of course there are boring matches played in Italy but there are boring matches played in England and Spain too. Also, the boredom factor is upped in England thanks to the title race being won well before the end of the season and the only uncertanties being European places and the relegation battle.
