Francis JeffersDebut Sub: v Manchester United (a), 26 December 1997. Full: v Derby County (a), 7 February 1999. Nicknames Skinny, Lanky, Noddy, Big-Ears, Dumbo. Honours England U-15's and U-16's. Newest Review: ... a permanently injured under-21 year old(?). It should always be borne in mind that Francis notched up an incredible 18 goals in 36 appearances for Everton - and he would hardly have had the service there that the Arsenal midfield are capable of providing. Maybe THIS is the key to the problem. After all, it is a fiercely intelligent and well-trained player that can a) guess where the likes ... more |

***REJIGGING: JEFFERS was truly TERRIBLE business for Arsenal. Yes, he got into the box from time to time. Could he put the ball in the net? Not very often. Bah humbug, etc. *** Like many an Arsenal fan, i have been headscratchingly puzzled by Monsieur Wenger's last addition to our strike force. Let's not forget that Jeffers was brought in to add something missing from a line-up that included Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord, Dennis Bergkamp, and Kanu. Hmm. Maybe this is the key to the problem. How does anyone fight for a place alongside those incredibly talented individuals? Let alone a permanently injured under-21 year old(?). ... I can't understand what led senior officials at Arsenal to grant Arsene Wenger a ludicrous amount of money - £8m rising to £10m on appearances - on an unproven player who didn't even outshine Kevin Campbell at Everton. From this first paragraph I think you can gather Jeffers is not one of my favourite players! To me it looks like Everton shouldn't get their extra £2million, as he might not play the required number of games. It's no wonder the picture above is of him in an Everton shirt; we haven’t really seen him in the Arsenal one yet. He's not the worst player in the world (that's Phil Neville!) and neither is he the worst ... Read the complete review

Many people criticised Arsenal for splashing out £10 million on an unproven striker this summer, but I believe, given time, he will develop into a great goalscorer and play a key role in Arsenal's title challenge. Francis Jeffers is currently 20 years old and averaged a goal every two games for Everton, which is no mean feat. He has been described as a "fox in the box". We have had Anelka and we have got Wiltord, but not since the days of Ian Wright have Arsenal had a player who can get in the box and consistently put the ball in the net. Jeffers could offer this extra firepower that even Henry is lacking. So far Jeffers has played a ... Read the complete review

He is a really good player and he plays for a good team that are currently in the premiership. He has got a left leg and a right leg and so he is able to use both his right foot and his left foot when he plays football. He must know what he is doing because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be playing football. He can also use his head, which is something not many people can say because if they use their head, it hurts them and they start crying and it becomes a disadvantage to them in the match. I think this player will have a good season and I hope he scores a lot of goals because he is probably in my dream team. ... Read the complete review

Francis Jeffers is one of the latest signings for Arsenal. He was bought from Everton for a fee of 8 million and 10 million depending on appearances on the 14th of June 2001. He is 20 years old and has reprsented England at under 15 and 16 levels. Last season he scored 20 goals in 40 games for Everton. He came up through the youth system of Everton and has not made an inpact yet. He was also called up for a full international against Hungary in April 2000. Arsenal have had problems trying to find a striker who can really score apart from Thierry Henry and this is were Jeffers comes in because Arsenal have not had a player who really gets into the six yard box ...
