Advantages: helps child's development

Disadvantages: cost

My daughter got her first puzzle when she was 8 months old. It was one of those early learning wooden ones with the little pegs on the top. The pieces are matched into the slots it makes animal noises. At first it was difficult for her to do which is understandable. It did not take long for her to get the hang of it and I found myself looking for another to challenge her. She loved them and they really helped her hand and eye co-ordination development.

The next stage after the puzzles with the pegs are the two or four piece chunky ones. Asda do some great ones, again featuring animals which is a real bonus as she loves them. These are good to get children to examine the pictures and try to re-create it using the puzzle pieces.

Now she uses all the large piece puzzles. She loves them and it is a good time for us to talk to each other.

The only draw back I think about kids puzzles is the price. A decent wooden puzzle in early learning is about £8. A pack of 4 puzzles is £10. I was pleasently surprised when I was browsing around Marks and Spencers and came across puzzles for £5. They are excellent floor puzzles. One is build a town which includes the police station, fire station, the doctors and local school. Another good one is build a farm which connects to the town and has all the animals and their homes. Once she has built them she puts all her animals on them and plays for ages.

For older children they do alphabet chains and story puzzles all for £5 which is a real bargain.

My opinion is that all children should be encouraged to do puzzles from a young age. It encourages hand and eye co-ordination and observation skills. They are also great fun!!!!!!!!!!!

My brother-in-law bought us a baked bean jigsaw one Christmas. It is just a picture of thousands of baked beans. It took us weeks to complete, never again!

Jigsaws are great, as you can get them for any age. As our kids have unusual names, we got special jigsaws made for them with their names on.
