Judo in General ... Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or applying a choke. Kicks, punches, and thrusts are also practiced, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata). They are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

I spent a lot of my time in the air during my first few years. Thank goodness one of the first things they teach you at Judo is how to land. I got pretty good at it by the end. It’s surprising, but staying relaxed and slapping the plastic-covered foam mats with an arm as you land does stop it hurting. Judo was developed in Japan in the 1880s by Jigoro Kano, using techniques from ju-jitsu. Soon representatives from his Kodokan club were beating fighters from the other martial arts, and Kano’s system was adopted by the Japanese police. Even now, its one of the tougher martial arts, full contact from the start. None of this waving your arms ...  Read the complete review

The aim of Judo is to throw the opponent to the ground and then if necessary apply a hold to the opponent to keep him there. If you take up Judo you will learn ways to fall without hurting yourself, ways to throw another human being over, and a few ground fighting positions and escapes from them. Judo is a brilliant sport, very well regulated and great fun. It is not a method of self-defense, it is not a martial art. When taught properly Judo is very safe, much safer than you would think. Good for all ages although its appeal tails off after 50 years of age. Promotes strength, balance and a basic understanding of the human anatomy. Judo schools are very ...  Read the complete review

Opinions usually begin with the origins of Judo as they do with other Martial Arts. This does not happen with any other sport or collections of sports that I know. The reasons are not mysterious. Judoka (one who practises, or as we say plays, Judo) are proud of what Judo has taught them and they are encouraged and also eventually want to remember where this wonderful sport or art came from. It has been well documented elsewhere so I will just give my honest opinion about Judo for all and in particular, children. The Jesuits had a saying, "Give me the child at the age of seven and I will give you back the man!" ...  Read the complete review
