Advantages: good motivator
Disadvantages: not a clue about tactics
After the dismal failure of the England football team during Euro 2000 where a lack of skill was blatantly obvious amongst the players and a lack of tactical awareness was obvious amongst the England coaches, is it time for Keegan to go? Whilst it is unfair to criticize one person too much in a team game (particularly when they only take over part way through a disappointing qualifying competition) the responsibility must rest with the person who picked the squad to go to the championships and then picked the tactics deployed during the championship itself. The fact remains that the only team who performed worse than England during Euro 2000 was Germany and they have acknowledged that they had sent their worst ever team to a major championship. Even the likes of Slovenia (with a fraction of the players available to England) showed what could be achieved with a bit of skill. Keegan deserves another chance if only to have a full qualifying programme under his reign in order to give him the chance to mould the team into his team, whether or not he uses that chance is a different matter. Let us hope that he can use his motivational powers to make this team succeed. The signs do not look promising judging from the squad selected for the forthcoming friendly against France it would appear that he is not going to change his tactics and that he is going to be loyal to the players he so badly managed during the summer. Time is running out Keegan you need to act now or you will not be England’s boss for much longer.
