Newest Review: ... with about 1/2 acre of garden which is home to at least a dozen pheasants, so we are used to birds wandering around. We acquired a hen house which is big enough for maybe 4 hens in the indoor bit but isn't big enough for 4 in the outdoor bit. The hens were kept in for the first week we had them so that they got used to "their" home. Since then we have let them have the run of the garden from 8am until 6pm every day. They have stayed in the middle section of the garden which is where we have a wooded area and raised vegetable beds which they can't get in to. Well we've finally done it !! We are the proud owners (or rather our 17yr old daughter is) of two lovely chickens. One white and one black. Now we have had a huge debate over naming these chickens - Darling Daughter wanted to call them Kiev and Korma (she has a warped sense humour!) , Darling Husband thought Nugget and Tikka.....but once we had got them home and saw them properly we have decided to call theme Babs and Rocky after the great stars of Chicken Run. .. and yes we know Rocky was a cockerel but hey! Well, Jamie Oliver has a lot to answer for! After watching his documentary highlighting the plight of battery hens I was converted and do my best to avoid cruelly produced chicken meat and eggs wherever possible. This was taken a step further when I saw a load of battery hens at my local RSPCA home and snapped three up for a mere 20 pound donation. BARGAIN!! **FOOD** Hens are easy pets to keep, they eat everything! From slugs to breakfast cereals they demolish the lot, Demolish being the right word because if they get into your flowerbeds they'll demolish those as well!
