I love cooking and the messier it is the better. I believe every child/person should know basic food hygiene, nutrition and cookery.
I once had to teach a friend the same age as myself how to cook an omelette and the father of my child didn't know what a leek was or how to cook it.
I don't believe you can expect a child to eat heathily if they don't know the value of their food or how be hygienic in the kitchen if you never do it with them or show them. I'm very fortunate my mother showed us kids how to cook and we were involved in every way (including washing up).
I think children need educating when it comes to domestication. My brother who has lived with his dad for the majority of his life doesn't know how to clean. He just hasn't a clue. When I had my baby I had a c-section and couldn't do much, he stayed with me the week after I left hospital. I asked him to hang the washing out and he said he didn't know how. He specifically asked how to hang a pair of jeans, I said by the bottom (of the leg). Well he literally hung them by the bottom, by the seat of the jeans. It was quite a sight.
This inability to do basic chores seems to be common in this next generation. So yes kid in kitchen definitley. I have my son in the kitchen now (not right now) he's 18 months old, I tell him what I am doing and what I am cooking while he sits in his high chair, he already helps in hanging the washing up and I intend to involve him fully in all aspects food related, from budgeting and planning the shopping/meals through to laying the table and serving the meal, then washing up after( the best part).

- 10/02/06 My son loves to cook with me when I am in the kitchen, I think it is good to teach a child who is interested in learning or just playing around, as long as they feel like it, I don't think you can force it on them. |

- 09/02/06 I always get both my kids involved in the kitchen......they love to help make dinner, and even have their own little aprons! Just last night they made their own pizzas.....i put them in oven and took them out! I find they eat things they have helped make better than just sitting there waiting for it to be put on the table!
