Advantages: They get to learn new skill you get to spend some fun time together
Disadvantages: Care needs to be taken with sharp knives and hot cooker
In this age where kids want to be on electronic game systems any chance they get its great to involve them in a essential life skill.
Of course be carefull and only give the child tasks that suit his development and be aware of saftey whilst in the kitcen
From an early age i've involved my son in helping me in the kitchen. I've bought a few childrens cook books over the years and my son now ages 11 loves choosing a recipe from one of these books .
He usually chooses a recipe on a saturday morning and then we go through the ingredients together, he then writes a list of all the things we need to buy. We then visit the local shop to get any ingredients we need .
Cooking with my son has been some of the most fun times i've enjoyed with him as he's growing up.
For me i get to help him learn new skills, talk to him about things in a relaxed way as we all know boys are not big talkers.
He gets to improve a large range of skills
His maths by measuring ingredients
He gains some independance and boosts his confidence
He improves his reading and writing whilst planning recipe.
He improves his fine motor skills by weighing out and mixing and dividing etc
Learns science by seeing hows things change through the addition of heat, liguid to heat when making a sponge cake for example
But best of all we get to sit down and eat whatever we have made together
Thanks for reading
Summary: All round family fun and cheaper than eating out
