Advantages: simple and quick to make
Disadvantages: too many to choose
One of my favourite knitted toy designers has got to be Jean Greenhowe. The patterns are incredibly simple, easy to understand and very suitable for beginners. As long as you can cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease and cast off you should have no problem at all making wonderful toys. The small knitted booklets that are published (I’ll find out who by soon, I’ve only got one I’ve had since I was 5 with me at the moment and know its changed since then) are bright and colourful with the toys being displayed well in the photos. Depending on the kind of toy or booklet you want there can be tens of different small toys to make in a single booklet, or just 4 or 5 larger ones with incredible details. One of these larger toys is a scarecrow with a carrot for his nose, a mouse in his hat, bird on his shoulder etc. One other thing I find useful with the patterns is that they are very simple to adapt. One of the booklets contains a general pattern for the body of a doll and many different variations in accessories to make many different dolls, from witches with broomsticks to nurses with water bottles! Even I have been able to create my own dolls including a Robin Hood character with a bow and arrow set! There are so many different Jean Greenhowe patterns out there that there must be the perfect toy for everyone! Knit well my friends! xxxx evil emma xxxx

- 14/07/03 Knitwellwools may be cheap but their postage is a bit high £2.95 for 1 book - second class postage. Try www.knitting-yarn.co.uk - the books are about the same price but the postage is only £1.95 however much you order and its first class postage. I have bought loads of Jean Greenhowes books from them - she is such a great designer - I especially like the jiffy knits - so easy for beginners, just garter stitch strips!! Even kids can have a go - but you might have to sew them up for them - my kids love stuffing them - usually a bit toooo much. |
