Advantages: no idle hands., proud with finished garment, people still love knitted baby clothes

Disadvantages: its a dying art now

What a dreadful shame that the younger generation are not taught to knit at school or even at brownies any more. It truely is a dying art.

Mention knit now and it gets muddled up with nits!

My generation all had Grannies that taught us to knit. They were not necessary our mums or dads Mothers but any kindly older lady that would say "come on lass let me teach you".

We knitted anything from egg and tea cosies to squares for bedcovers for the hospitals.

I taught my children to knit. Yes even my son as he didnt want to go to cubs and not pass his knitting badge! They had to take it.

Every new baby in the family meant the clicking of needles to make little cardigans for him/her. My Mum still does this.

Now though the new generations are not taught to knit and the older generations that have been taught to knit, a lot have arthritis and find it hard to do. Although a lot has been said that the ones that knitted did not get this as young as the ones that did not knit as it kept them supple.

If you look around though there are still a lot of craft shops that sell knitting wool and some very complicated knitting patterns. So perhaps knitting will make a come back. I hope so.
