Advantages: Seemingly a great ambassador to the game.

Disadvantages: That press attention is ‘getting’ into her game.

That was one memorable quote from one of the leading tennis commentators in the wake of events stemming from Wimbledon 2000. But concentrating on her ability to play tennis, she is good but has never really achieved her full potential.

A reason is that the opposition is just too good (the Williams sisters, Hingis and Davenport are certainly very formidable) meaning that Kournikova’s game is never really suited to the ‘power’ tennis that seems to be de rigueur these days in the women’s game (not to say she has no power of her own....look at her ground strokes).

But can she keep her own against supposedly ‘lesser’ opposition like Seles, Pierce and Martinez. Unfortunately, no. This has meant that Kournikova has been praised for other things rather than her tennis.
