Shoalin kung fu is an ancient martial art that stems from China. There are two main styles, Nothern and Southern, with the main difference being in range of combat, typically northern shoalin kung-fu is long range, while southern is short range. Long range means that blows are delivered from near and far which thus allows use of kicks as well as close and powerful body shots. The martial art is typically a defensive one, and for this reason it is believed that the only way to have a chance of defeating a shoalin monk is make them attack you, which is not likely to occur. The martial art originates in the shoalin temple where religous men were frequently attacked hus necessitatingthem tpo defend themselves. The monks found greta style and natural skill in the movements of animals and advanced styles mimic the defensive and attacking motions of animals such as the money and tiger. In ancient China there was once a ruler who was facing defeat in war. He eventually comissioned the hepl of the monks who in turn set out in a group of 13 to defeat some 3000 warriors and regain control of china. Nowadays kungfu has found a route into popular western culture mainly because of the exploits of Bruce Lee who defied convention and started teaching in the west. Now it is possible to find numerous classes across the world. If you take up kung fu prepare to be pushed to excel and find a better understanding of yourslef. It is rare that a master will teach the physical side without requiring the student to at least better a small amount about their mental well being. The martial art is incredibly physical. It is very athletic and concentrates more on speed than than muscular power. The force behing blows lies in a combination of these two elements, but truly advanced students will be able to perform very gymnastic excercises such as sumersaults. Typically classes cost between £5-£8 for an hour or two.

very cool and useful opinion, i do tae kwon do and i find that it is not so philosophical in its techniques as with most techniques performed in kung fu or gung fu, which is a shame.

Very compact description of a large subject, well done.
Not all styles are acrobatic mind you, nor is it all speed - position counts for more.
