Advantages: cooking for yourself!, you can cook what you want when you want it!
Disadvantages: time! effort! money!
You will need: *Pots and Pans, *Cutlery and Crockery, *Parents who will buy stuff for you before semester starts *A phone and someone who can cook at the end of the line – preferably your Mum *Recipe books and/or notes – “secret recipes” that your nan/granma/mum use! *Microwave Ingredients: *Anything that your lovely parents will buy for you – it sounds cheeky but get luxuries that you know you wont be able to afford otherwise – stuff like wine, chicken, prawns, crisps etc, *Food given (YES given!) to you FREE during fresher’s fayres such as Pot noodles *Chocolate and other sweet products – just in case everything goes utterly wrong and you get sooooo stressed! *Anything that you can afford! Stuff like bread, beans, pasta, and rice are always quite useful! *Herbs, spices and seasonings – SALT, PEPPER, CURRY POWDER! *Friends to share your student culinary delights and disasters with! *Spice! The fun, cheeky sort so you can have loads of fun cooking the stuff! Preparations: Be prepared even before you get into the car to get to university. Make sure you have everything that you need. Go to shops with parents to buy food and equipment/utensils. Remember if you don’t have it when you cant afford it then you aren’t able to cook it (unless there are some nice people living with you who will lend you stuff!) You will need cooking utensils such as: - Knifes – bread knife, vegetable knife etc, - Chopping Boards - Frying Pan - Pots - Casserole Dish (essential for Pasta bakes/cottage pies) - Wok – great and easy to use! - Can opener and bottle opener – ESSENTIAL! - Fish slice, spatula, serving spoons, whisk, potato masher, - Scales and measuring jug – so you know just how much milk to put in your pasta and sauce or angel delight mix! - Cheese toasty mak
er – lovely appliance – you’ll need cheese and bread as well though…. Method: Well, you know – you cook the food in the pans and pots and put the finished product on the Crockery and eat with the cutlery. If you have any problems or queries use the phone to call your mother and she should be able to advise you with questions such as how long you cook the chicken or how to use the microwave! Microwaves are very easy to use, as are toasters and kettles – all vital appliances when making food fit for a student who quite frankly cant be arsed! Use sweet products as snacks and/or desserts. Especially in times of stress such as the night before exams or worse still – results! Add friends to help and/or share cooking duties. As Winnie the Pooh says as he walks along with Piglet – “Its so much friendlier with two!” Mix in a bit of fun and laughter with extra helpings of spice – makes the whole effort so much more worthwhile! To garnish: Tomato Ketchup usually hides the taste of something that you have bodged up! Either that or loads of salt and pepper – or better still get yourself typically studently drunk so you don’t really care what it tastes like! Emergency methods: If all goes kaput there are some alternative options - Use the phone to get a take away, try to do this only in emergency, yeah – its nice but doing it every night can cause severe bank problems and isn’t very healthy! - Use the pot-noodles/super-noodles in the cupboard that you got free during fresher’s week – easy, tasty and fill the spot… most of the time! - Make toast! Go on – you know you can! And if you’re feeling adventurous put some beans on top! Use the curry powder to mix with the beans – very Gary Rhodesque! And don’t forget – being a student should be f

- 30/01/02 Good op.
I'm the worlds worst cook i'm sure!
Doesn't matter how many pots and pans,
Cutlery, crockery, my mum, or recipe books I have to hand.... I still manage to burn the stuff, blow it up, not cook it at all, forget to plug the microwave in... etc!

Jill - oh yes - it certianly does - but you pay for your errors if you try and cover them up too much!
ssmolblu - try brown sauce and tomato 2getha - found it by accident but it actually tastes quite nice! :-)
Chandy - we soooo need spices - if not then I'd go mad with plain value beans, ooohhh and try putting ground pepper on cheap burgers - works wonders!
