Advantages: Gaining a new skill, freedom ,and Independance.

Disadvantages: Reactions from other drivers. Expensive

Learning to drive is probably one of the most popular skills we try to learn within our lives. It isnt an easy skill to learn, and many people fail several times along the way. Why do we put ourselves through it? Lifestyle and independance!!

I think that the age for learning to drive should be changed to 21, or at the very least 19. When I turned 17 I had no interest in learning to drive at all. It was only when I turned 21 that I felt I was ready to take on the huge mental and financial task of learning to drive. Being older defianely helped me with my learning to drive. I was more mature and more aware of the dangers, and I think this is what helped me to pass first time.

There are too many young deaths due to driving. Be it due to boy racers or old grannies, there is no escaping the fact that there are an awful lot of drivers out there who should never have passed their tests.

When I learnt to drive I took double lessons. It was pretty intense but I think that it definately helped. What also helped me was the fact that I had a teacher who I felt really relaxed with. This is very important.

When learning to drive I used a proper instructor, but also went out in my boyfriends car. I think this was a mistake. Changing from the car my Instructor had to the car my boyfriend had was a huge deal to me. It all felt weird, and different. Both cars handled very differently and this just ended up frustrating me to hell. I lost quite a bit of confidence this way, let alone caused a few arguements!! I would definately recommend just sticking to your instructors car.

I think that too many drivers on the roads today soon forget that they were learners once. I see so many people getting frustrated by the fact that they are stuck behind a learner driver. People should be more patient, and stop tail gaiting or overtaking at dangerous places just to get past the poor learner driver who is doing nothing but trying to learn a new skill. The only way to learn is to get out there and try it, people should remember how they felt when it happened to them.

As I have said earlier, I was lucky enough to pass my driving test first time. I feel that this was because I genuinely felt ready for it at the time, and also I had a bit of help from my old friend "Rescue remedy". If you are not familiar with this then you should be. Basically it is a herbal remedy which helps to relax you. You drop a few drops on your tongue and this really helps. When I used it for my driving test it calmed me down so much that when the examiner told me that I had passed I was so chilled out I didnt really get excited. Nevermind, a small price to pay for a great way to relieve nerves.

Rescue remedy is also great for feeling stressed, or if you are scared of flying, or for job interviews. Any situation where you would feel nervous or uptight!! I would definately recommend this as a great way to take the edge of the driving test.

Another thing which annoys me about a certain group of drivers today is the elderly. I dont mean pensioners, I am talking the really elderly. I work in a GP surgery, and so many times have I glanced out of the window to see an elderly person trying to park their car (badly), then when they get out of the car they can barely walk without crutches. This cannot be safe!! Their reaction speed will be greatly reduced, if they are even capable of doing an emergency stop. This generation would not have taken a driving test, and I feel that they should not be on the roads. Or if by some small chance there are some 80 year olds out there who are still really great drivers, they should have a driving test once a year. Not just a letter from the doctor to say that they can still drive, but a proper driving test.

It is so important to keep our road safety to a high standard. Learning to drive is a horrible experience to have to go through, but unfortunatly if you want the freedom you have to go through the process.

If you are a learner driver, please dont give up it is so worth the wait, but I sympathise with you. I hated learning to drive, and would get so frustrated at times.

Good luck to all you budding drivers out there!! Drive safely.

Summary: Learning to drive is the best and worst thing you can do.

I thought your comments about the elderly were a little unkind as I can think on an age group that contributes to far more accidents on the road. They are subject to extra checks as you mention and would any of us really want to take a test every eyar and feel confident of passing it.
