Learning to drive.

Learning to drive was one of the most expensive and tedious thing I have ever done (and I failed twice) but rewarding and builds your confidence.

I think the easiest way to describe it would be in bullet points.....

1. Because I have particular bad hand eye feet coordination I decided to learn automatic, I say to anyone thinking along the same line just bite the bullet and learn Manuel. At the time I was living near Aldershot and the only automatic instructor lived miles away so I paid the grand sum of £30 per hour lesson.

2. When I first started my lessons I was shocked at how my instructor just told me to take to the road I had never driven on a road before and this is really scary to just 'do it' so my advice if you can get some one in your family or a friend to take you out before your lessons start do it ( I believe you must be fully insured to drive on a public road/area and the other person in the car must have a full driving licence the have held for 2/3 years? )
Perhaps my instructor thought throwing me in at the deep end will toughen me up, in my case the complete opposite it scared me half to death

3. So after about 50 lessons (Ummm 50 x 30 =£1500 bloody hell never added it up till now!!) my instructor thought I was ready for my test I was so confident I was going to pass and by this stage I was pregnant with my first child so I thought iv got to do this and get it out the way how wrong could I have been
Put it this way if an ambulance is right behind you and cant get passed don't go up on the pavement carry on till they can pass you or you get a big FAIL :(
No one had ever told me this, I had seen other drivers do it but your not allowed.

Apart from that the driving test man was really nice and calm explained things to me and I got to keep my instructor in the back of the car too through the whole thing.
My second test was a disaster witch landed my in deep mud literally!!

My advice on taking lessons is to take your time I know lessons are expensive but if you rush it even if you pass your test you may not be ready for the things the road can throw at you and other drivers. Its all about confidence in your self (but not being cocky) . I also think you should shop around for your instructor you have to feel comfortable with them or you won't be at ease.
Good luck if you are staring lessons and I hope you learn to drive well and safe soon

Summary: go for it :)

five times for me, have since driven for 20 years accident free. The ambulance thing seems a bit daft to me, I always get as far over as I can, but I spose they could argue pedestrians could be involved!
