Lionel Andrés Messi ( Leo Messi) is an argentinian footballer born on the 24th of June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. He currently plays for Barcelona and the Argentinian national team.He is widely regarded as the best football player in the world currently. Cristiano Ronaldo currently holds the prestigious Ballon d'or award but Messi had a more spectacular season last time around and was triumphant over Ronaldo's Manchester United team to lift the champions league trophy in Rome 2009.

At the tender age of just 22 he has achieved what most players will not even achieve in their whole careers. He is one of the most naturally gifted players to have ever played the game and it is no wonder from a very young age comparisons have been made to Argentinian legend Diego Mardona. He currently wears the number 10 shirt for both Barcelona and Argentina which Maradona also used to wear as a player.

He made his debut for the Barcelona first team in the 2004-05 season and broke a La Liga (Spanish football league)record in the process becoming the youngest footballer to play a league game and followed that up by becoming the youngest goalscorer. He made his league debut when he was 17 years and 114 days old after making his unofficial debut in a friendly when he was at 16 years and 145 days old.His team mate Bojan has since broken the record for the youngest debutant in La Liga.

In his debut season (2004-05)Barcelona won the La Liga title. The following season he was part of the team that won a double of the league once again and the Champions league. The 2006-07 season was when he really established himself as a first team regualr in the Barcelona team. It was also the season where he scored a spectacular goal almost identical to the one Maradonna famously scored against England in World Cup 1986. He ran about the same distance when scoring the goal, beat the same number of players (six, including the goalkeeper) and scored from a similar position against Getafe in a spanish cup game. The 2007-08 season did not bring any major honours but he still managed to score a similar amount of goals to the previous season.

The 2008-09 season has been Messi's most spectacular so far as he helped Barcelona to an unprecedented treble winning la liga, the Spanish Cup as well as the Champions league. He was pivotal in the team's achievements as he scored 38 goals including one in the final of the Champions league against Manchester United.

He has played 38 games for the Argentinian national team and has scored a total of 12 goals.

Messi is a fantastic player and he has everything you would want in a very good football player. He is one of the most entertaining players to watch especially when he is running past players,scoring goals and producing skillfull moves. He has great skill, pace and dribbling ability as well as a great shot. He is not very tall being around 5 foot 7 but this does give some advantages as it allows him to have a low centre of gravity and to make sharp turns and movements as well as performing other skillful moves. This makes it harder for opposition players to take the ball off him.He may not be much of an aerial threat but his goal in the Champions league final was with his head. He has the ability to find space and get past defenders even if he is marked tightly. At just 22 years of age as well he has the potential to improve even further and achieve even greater things. He is also alot quieter than Ronaldo off the football field and we do not see his private life splashed across the tabloids all the time. He is a relatively quiet character off the pitch but is very explosive once he gets onto the football pitch. Overall I would say he is currently the best footballer around and this will probably be confirmed with him winning the Ballon d'or award at the end of the year.
