Advantages: Somewhere after death
Disadvantages: We don't know if it exists
This subject has always interested me so I decided to do some research and found out some interesting things. The first point I'd like to make though is that life after death doesn't necessarily mean going to heaven. It could well be some form of paradise, hell or possibly just another life on earth. Some believe that you may come back as another animal. So I'm going to look at some of the different ideas.
- Heaven/Paradise -
Well I think we all know a bit about this one. This is the simple idea that when we die, we go on to some place where everything is perfect. A large number of religions believe in this idea, in some form. The most common of which is heaven. This is a christian belief that, when you die, if you have been good and lived a good christian life, then you get to go to heaven to live in bliss for ever more. Muslims have a similar idea of paradise and many other religions have some form of paradise after death. This at first seems a bit far fetched to those not of a religious persuasion. I myself am loosely religious, to the point I call myself christian and follow the rules when I can and even I am not certain. So as I said I did some research and found that there is actually some evidence to support the idea. Many people who have experienced near death experiences, have described seeing a bright light when they nearly died. Others have described levitation when they were close to death. This is backed up by the story of a women in Ohio in america. She was in a hospital having suffered serious head injuries. She went into cardiac arrest and desribed levitating. She saw herself lifted up in the room. At first nobody believed her until she thought of a way to prove it. She told them that there was a yellow ball on top of the wardrobe on the otherside of the room. It was discovered she was right, and it wud have been impossible for her to have known without standing on something to take a look. This was impossible, because she was lying in bed the entire time since she had entered the hospital and there were surveillance tapes to prove it. There have been many other reports from places throughout the world of similar experiences.
- Reincarnation -
This is a belief held by a number of religions, the most well known of which being hinduism. The basic idea is when you die, depending on how good you have been, you get reincarnated as another animal. If you have been good you get to be a human again, if not you get to be a lesser animal. At first this seems to be deeply flawed, mainly because there are far more humans than there used to be. And if you believe greenpeace far less animals. However, if you look carefully some scientists believe that actually there have always been the same amount of animals. As some thrive others die, the world stays in balance. If this is true the theory of reincarnation becomes very plausible.
- New World -
Although no major religions follow this idea it is becoming increasingly popular. The basic idea is when we die we go to another universe that is different to our own. It has no real specifics, but it is thought it provides new challenges for mankind. This theory comes in many different forms. It in some ways is very similar to the paradise theory except with one major difference. If you have been good then you go to a better world than if you have been bad. So it's sort of a mixture between the two above.
- Overall -
The main problem with all these theories is they can't be proved. The only way to find out is to die and then you can't tell anyone anyway. The simple truth is we will never know. It is a question which will never be answered and so it will remain a mystery. The truth is what you believe and we all have to make up our own minds.
Summary: Does it exist? You decide
