What Lies Beyond (Life after Death)

Those who follow a faith can rest in the knowledge that something awaits them and that something usually reflects what they aspire to in their present lives. Some slaves in ancient Rome believed that by bearing the burden of the position they were born into, they qualified for a better life in the next, making their ordeal that much easier to endure (unsurprisingly, it is thought that the Romans initiated and encouraged this). The Vikings liked a slap-up feast after a good bout of bloodletting so their version of the afterlife had them carried off by warrior maidens to dine at that great table in the sky. Every culture since the beginning of time has held its own views, often to the point of killing anyone who didn?t agree (whilst this is a category on life after death, it is an integral part of religion and vice versa).
