Advantages: You wouldn't be able to read dooyoo if you weren't alive!

Disadvantages: N/A

Like many on dooyoo I’ve been asked by jillymurphy to write an opinion on my favourite thing as a celebration of her 4th year cancer free, so here it is. I don’t know jillmurphy at all, except for reading a couple of her opinions but thought I should give it a go and show my support. I’m bashing this straight into the dooyoo system, no hint of a word processor, so I apologise in advance for any grammatical errors or if it’s all muddled. I don’t know how long the opinion will end up or whether it will be any good but I guess we’ll have to see how it goes.

You’re all moderately intelligent people so I’m sure you’ve guessed that my favourite thing isn’t ‘life’ magazine, so what am I going to ramble on about I hear you shout. My favourite thing is life. Obviously there is no specific category for life in general, I wouldn’t expect one on a consumer site, so it’s probably best if you don’t leave a rating – this is for Jill.

Does it really matter what you believe? Whether Atheist or Christian, Buddhist or Muslin, whatever, life is something most of us take for granted. We all get stressed about being unable to pay bills or meeting people for the first time and we all get depressed from time to time, I’m no different. However, I never spend any length of time wallowing in the mud or getting down because I’m glad, I’m happy, in fact I’m ecstatic that I’m here at all. Life is something that can be taken away all too easily, almost everyone has been touched by bereavement or health problems, but for the time being I’m happy to be alive.

As I’ve said life is something most of us really do take for granted. From the moment I wake up to the last minute of the day there is always something inside me that just happy to have been given a life. I love pulling open the curtains and feeling the sun warm my face,
I love wandering down the street drawing in a lung full of air (however polluted it may be). I love hearing the seagulls calling out for their mate. I love tasting the salt on the sea air. I love being able to tell people how I’m feeling. I love being able to laugh or cray. I love feeling wanted. I love helping others. I love being able to give something. I love eating my favourite foods. I love feeling tired and being able to fall asleep. I love waking up again. I love seeing children playing in a park. I love to be able to play in a park. I love being able to share things with others. I love meeting new people. I love feelings. I love all the mistakes that I’ve made that I an chuckle at now. I love having choices as to what to wear. I love to gaze at the stars millions of miles away. I love moonlight. I love sunlight. I love the smell of roses, even if it does make me sneeze. I love all those new experiences I've had and that I could have. I love the tastes, the sounds, the colour, the warmth, everything about everyday. Do you get the picture yet?

Sure there is plenty of inequality out there and sometimes it makes me mad but when you see starving children in Africa smiling you know that life isn’t about doing everything to make money, it’s not material, it’s all about life. Of course the local homeless people are down because they haven’t got that much but if you spoke to them you would find they are not down with life, they still love being able to breathe the air freely, they love sharing their secrets with their friends. I guess I just want to give thanks to whoever, whatever or to no-one in particular for allowing me some time to experience all these different things.

My point is that it’s no good feeling upset or stressed, life is something that is only likely to last a few decades and could be cut short at any time. You should enjoy it. So the boss is having a go
at you for photocopying your arse or the bank is getting onto you about your overdraft limit, sure these are important, but you should always smile at the thought of being on this wonderful planet.

Look, life’s great and I love it – so there!

"Jill Murphy asked me to write about one of my favourite things to help her celebrate her fourth anniversary of cancer-free living and to remind ourselves of all the nice things in the world. It takes more muscles to make a frown than a smile you know. If you'd like to join in, whether you've only just joined dooyoo, or you've been here ages, you're more than welcome. Just write about one of YOUR favourite things, make your title "A Favourite Thing: [your choice]" and include this paragraph at the foot of your opinion. And post before Friday, 9th August."
