I was surprised when I saw this topic as I have not noticed a great increase in litter & littering. I then realised that it is because I only looked at my local area. As I live in a wealthy commuter village I do not see a lot of litter but during a recent trip into Birmingham I made a point of looking at the state of certain areas.

It became obvious that the "class" of an area, and of course the "class" of the people living in it, relate directly to the amount of litter that is present. In my village the children are brought up properly and do not litter our streets, this can be contrasted by what I saw as I travelled through the asian area of town where I saw a father literally emptying a bag full of rubbish into the gutter in front of his children. It makes you wonder if some old people are right when they say these areas were better before the immigrants took them over.

It cannot all be blamed on immigrants though, in many low-class areas I saw teenagers of all nationalities throwing cans and wrappers on the floor. These people are really the dregs of society, they realise they have no future (apart from working at the local factory) and decide they are not going to make any effort to improve themselves.

I would like to see much tougher laws on people like this as they are stunting the evolution of our society. If I were to suggest that these people should be sent to work camps I would be criticised but I honestly do believe that this would teach them right from wrong.

The lower classes of this country are holding us all back, be it the poor performance of inner-city schools or the lack of basic manners that they show. It is time for the more decent amongst us to protest against this and demand that harsh punishments are laid out.

How long before these vile people from the rough areas come to my village and ruin it? I hope we never see their sort round here.

If you are one of the few decen
t people that live amongst these filthy people then tell them off next time you see them littering the area. Reclaim the area as your own, don't let the immigrants empty their bins in the streets. It is time that everyone showed some basic respect to each other and not force people to wade through other peoples filth.

The evidence is all around us, our society is heading into the gutter and it is time that people were eductaed that it must stop. Stricter laws (including large fines and possible jail time) should be enforced with even more severe punishments for repeat offenders. In Thailand teenagers are caned or whipped if they are caught for even minor vandalism. This is a practice I would like to see introduced in this country as it would certainly force some of the inner-city urchins to think twice before they throw their rubbish on the ground.

Wow that's a bit extreme! I agree that it is a class thing to some extent but not always! I come from a poor working calss background but my parents did bring us up to respect the law and other people and not to drop litter. I think you either do care or you don't. I run a voluntary litter picking group in my home town and every other Sunday a group of us get together and spend an hour picking up litter in our local park. There was a lot at the start but gradually over the summer we managed to get it spotless. It recently won a green flag award! So it pays to get involved and take responsibility for your own community. Don't leave it to others, do it yourself, it works! If anyone is interested in joining my online group it's at www.smartgroups.com/group s/litterpickers

I live in a shit area of Birmingham, the people are tramps and leave the bin bags in the lift instead of walking the 2 metres to the rubbish chute. I am too scared to say anything 'cos they will probably beat me up and chuck me down the lift shaft.

A very good op. I live in a big town which, for the last 18 years has not had any litterbins. They were all removed because of the fear of terrorism. We were all told to tell our children to put their rubbish on the floor and the cleaners would go round every few hours and collect it all up. Terrible! I used to take a carrier bag and teach the kids to take it home.
On another point, some people are filthy regardless of race, class, creed or income. My daughter was at uni with a girl from a lovely Leicestershire village. She went to stay. They had a Mac Donalds in her Mums car. Whilst driving through the country Mother opens car window and slung 6 lots of lunch wrappings out!! This lady was middle class, living in a lovely area. My daughter was very upset.Society is not what it was! Kim
