Advantages: Treasure for scavengers, degrades quicker, makes interesting scenery
Disadvantages: none whatsoever
The coppers in Akron Ohio nicked me for littering the other day. It isn't what you think either. I was stuck in traffic and I had all this garbage in my car, empty McD papers, empty packs of smokes and a few dirty magazines that weren't keepers. And of course too many empty 40s. So I get out of my car to take a leak while I was waiting for a train to pass and I get charged with littering. Can you believe that? Something so natural and innocent as peeing is now littering in Akron Ohio. Apparantly the public obscenity laws are based on community standards and they have been having trouble persecuting people for whipping it out in public so now they consider it littering. But it made me think a lot about this subject. Enjoy your read. All of you closed minded people who can not open your mind get out your arsenal of NU ratings now if you are so inclined to pass out NUs to people whose opinion differs from your own mainstream views. Like my title says I believe that littering is a good thing and I hope to explain why. When people litter is disperse garbage across the landscape and prevents it from being either burned or buried (most recycleables are burnt or buried-ever notice it is one truck that picks up the trash you have so carefully sorted?). This is good. If the trash is being blown around the countryside it can easier biodegrade, be utilized by an animal, or even a lower life form of scavenger, poor people who can pick up tin cans to sell. If you pitch the trash where it belongs it will never see the light of day. I used to do some recreational archeaology (think treasure hunting) and one thing I learned is that when we find artifacts it is stuff humans amassed in garbage pits (where it belonged) and here it is 6,000 years later, how many artifacts do you find that Cro-Magnons threw out their chariot windows? Do you think trash will rot away while buried in the dumps as readily as it does exposed to the elements? Animals do us
e cigarette butts, birds I believe. How can they find them in a landfill? And if you put rubbish in rubbish bins it will help camoflague bombs that the CIRA/RIRA puts there. It is safer to litter. Litter also creates jobs for people with no skills. One summer when Popeye used to be a teacher he ran a litter crew of local disadvantaged youths. He actually made the future prisoners and unwed single mothers work and picked up 12 times as much trash as the crew the year before with the same amount of hours. Now if people did not litter how could we see the satisfaction of poor people having to pick up litter? Plus Popeye had enough malboro miles to get a cool radio from the catalog you redeem your UPCs in. Plus they found a bunch of money and a LISA LISA and the CULT JAM CD, if people couldn't freely discard trash they probaly wouldn't have inadvertantly discarded such a treasure. Animals can eat at a lot of stuff you don't really consider food. Deer like to lick at cans and paper bags with glue on them. this helps deer get used to hanging out near the roadway and makes it easier for me to spotlight and poach them. In my state it is like a $500 fine for littering but I heard the cops like to make you pick up a mile worth of trash instead. I would like to see some cop make me pick up trash. I would add 15 empty shell casings and a dead cop to the roadside debris if they ever started with that crap on me. Why should I have garbage in my car? I mean it starts to smell and leaks, I should be able to throw it out the window in this free country of ours.

- 13/06/03 Your argument is not very convincing, but it is nice change to read a non-conventional perspective on littering. I used to enjoy littering: the simplest way to get rid of litter is to simply drop it! But that does not make it a good thing to do because litter is ugly. |

- 22/01/02 on second thought i just nominated this for a crown. littering is not only good for the animals it is a matter of national security. I just ran some calculations and that burning a landfill comment is very serious. What have we done to ourselves. I am going to move to the country away from any large landfill as soon as possible. |
