Right, first of all this will not be an opinion of statistics, slagging off Man Utd or who I would buy/drop if I were manager. This is what Liverpool FC means to me.

I love Liverpool. I don't know why. Just do. Not very good explanation eh? Not likely to get a gold crown with that sort of description. But those amongst you who feel the same about your team will know exactly what I mean. You don't like a team because they wear the best kits or have the best ground. 90% of the time its your hometown club - but not always, as in my case.

I come from Sheffield. I have a soft spot for Wednesday over United but have never supported either. I first started supporting QPR when I was about 5 because they were the first team that I had a foil badge sticker from Panini for. At this stage of my football life I thought when two teams played, they swapped positions in the league, eg. top plays bottom - bottom wins, bottom goes to top of league and top goes to bottom.

But gradually I started to pay more and more attention to a certain team in red. They used to win a lot (this was the early-mid eighties). After a period of time, I had gradually become a Liverpool supporter.

To be honest, the reason I think I ended up supporting Liverpool was because no-one in my family liked football, so I had no pressure to support either Wednesday or United. Liverpool had a lot of exposure at the time so I guess I was just a vunerable child subject to advertising. The club with the most exposure got me.

But that was then and this is now. I can't explain it, but now I love Liverpool FC. Not the players, or Anfield or anything concrete. The Club. The traditions it stands for. I think Liverpool more than any other club has a certain air about it that you cannot put into words but every fan knows.

Now my mood is dictated by a football result that has no direct baring on my life. How ridicu
lous is that? I think I'm a fairly intelligent person and I still cannot understand why how many times a ball was kicked into a net can affect my life in such a way. Its stupid.......

But that's when that particular ball is kicked into your net more times than you kick the ball into the other net. When Liverpool win its all worth while. You can be feeling down and sad, but come 16:45 and the result goes your way, those times when you've questioned the sanity of having you life affected by something so trival fly out the window.

Now, I proably could not have picked a worse team to support than Liverpool. Since 1990, teams that have been expected to be successful have. Teams that have been expected to be unsuccessful have. Bar Liverpool. Such is the expectation of the club, they are expected to win. And when they don't, its the best kind of ammunition for rival fans. The worst thing is I picked Liverpool and all this grief was of my own choosing. But thats Liverpool. And times are a changing too.......(watch for an update come May :} )

UPDATE: 10.04.02
Last night was awful. Liverpool were knocked out of the European Cup by Bayen Leverkeusen.
It was a good match and Liverpool could and perhaps should have won. The 2 things Liverpool are known best for (solid defending and Michael Owen's finishing) let them down. Overall though the better team won. Booooooooooo

I've also changed my Prospects of Success rating as I think Arsenal will win the league and it will be tight between Liverpool and ManUre over second.

Nice to see a soccer review written from the heart!

I think you have every reason to be optimistic my friend. Liverpool now look to have they best team in years and are still in contention for the premiership and to an extent the Champions League as well.

(Alan Hansen said something along these lines) As a Liverpool fan, at the start of each season, you've probably been HOPING they can be genuine title contenders. Now it is getting to the stage when you EXPECT them to be.
