I am not a sexist but it is a fact that 'Equality' has gone too far. If a woman is paid less than a man she immediately jumps up and claims sexism, if a pakistani is paid less than a white man he will claim racism. That may be the case very occasionally but I believe that there is a simple reason behind many of these situations - one person is more capable than the other. For example who could argue that a woman would make a better fireman than a man? or policeman? or pilot? there are certain professions that men excel at and their pay should reflect this. Equality is one step away from affirmative action, ask any average American and they will tell you that this is one of the biggest problems in the American business world. The world is not equal, we are not born equal, why should we expect equality? In todays world many women want equality in all the areas that suit them but still want to be treated like a lady in other areas. I know that some of you reading this will already be thinking that this is sexist but before you rate me badly and type some idiotic comment sit back and think about the issue. It is a simple fact that men associate better with other men and that will never change, from our first days at school we get on better with our own sex and that carries on through life. Therefore when a man makes it to Manager level and has the responsibility of giving out raises he is going to look at performances first and if he is put to a decision between a man who he knows and a woman who he doesn't he will pick the man. This is most definately unfair but guess what? Life isn't fair. It is a scientific fact that men's brains function better when it comes to numeracy and spatial awareness, a womans brain is far better at dealing with emotive situations. Therefore isn't it reasonable to expect men to be paid better in certain jobs? women do get paid more than men in many other areas (Counsellors, Therapists,
Escorts), I do not begrudge women their greater pay levels in those areas because I would agree that they are better at those jobs. The strive to be politically correct is ridiculous, many people try their hardest but don't really agree with it. Also be aware that this is just an opinion based upon conversations I have had with friends of both sexes, an opinion is never wrong but feel free to disagree. "Would you feel safe if a woman was flying your plane?" Ali G, 1999 A lot of people have claimed that this is sexist. I am personally offened to hear this as what I am trying to stress above is that Men AND Women have their own unique set of strengths and that in industries where these strengths are useful it is unreasonable to expect equal pay. I am not advocating unequal pay where both people are equally skilled just suggesting that there may be other reasons for these discrepencies.

- 10/08/01 Hmm.. controversial to say the least.
I don't think you are sexist.
Women are easily as capable (if not more so) as a man at most things, therefore deserving equal parity on pay.
Only in truly physical jobs are women perhaps not as "able" as a man to perform that job (off the top of my head, only royal marine, or SAS commando, spring to mind, for instance). However, to my knowledge, if a woman ever passed selection for the marines (I don't think any has, I seem to remember not long ago a couple trying), she would be paid the same as a man, and quite rightly so. |

- 09/08/01 Provocative isn't the word: "There are certain occupations where women are paid more then men...escorts"
Come one you can't be serious, and why are women inferior pilots or police officers exactly? The generalisations you draw are heavy handed and just that: generalisations. You completely ignore the main point of this section: how can you justify a man and woman doing the same job but being paid less??

- 09/08/01 It's always difficult to generalise but I think some of your generalisations are valid - however it could be put less provocatively - I think men and women are equal but different. As you say men may tend to do better in some jobs and women in others. The problem is this is a tendency, in a job where men tend to do better, they shouldn't be paid more because they're men - paying them more if they actually do better is another matter. Ben |
