Advantages: It's MY Manchester United Shirt, and I love it...

Disadvantages: None at all...

It arrived on my doorstep yesterday, wrapped in beautiful blue packaging. Well, it didn’t really land on my doorstep, because it couldn’t fit through the letterbox, and I had to sign for it anyway. The postman seemed a bit disgusted, he could see where the package came from – The Manchester United Megastore. He told me I shouldn’t be buying rubbish from places like that – what happened to supporting your home team? Well you see, I’ve lied to you before, and said my ‘home’ team was Burnley (though not ‘home’ as such, because I didn’t live there – if you understand), and that I supported them – but I don’t. I support Manchester United – I always have done, I always will. I can’t not. And I could say I still support Burnley (Please don't ask why I said I supported them, 'cos you know what? I really don't know!), but I can’t, because I love this product too much not to write about it, see?

It took a while to get to me, after searching through so many shops (“Sorry, we don’t supply them” – “Sorry, we’re sold out – we’re getting some in tomorrow – but if you don’t get up really early and camp outside then you won’t get one” – you know the kind of thing). The Manchester United Megastore on the official website was down, for some silly reason, so I had the one option – but from Old Trafford, the loveliest, most beautiful place on earth (although maybe not – because I haven’t been everywhere on earth – though I HAVE been to Old Trafford – so no ‘96-odd percent of so-called Man Utd fans haven’t been to The Theatre Of Dreams’, sort of comments please…) A quick telephone call, and it was mine. Mine, paid for, shirt, lettering, and packaging, only 7-10 days ‘til it arrives (apart from it took 11 days, but never mind). r><br><br>
My Manchester United football shirt. Mine. Mine. Mine. I chose the away/centenary/reversible kit, or whatever you prefer to call it, because I already have the home one, from last season. It’s a centenary kit, because it’s 100 years since Manchester United have been Manchester United, you know, because they were called Newton Heath, and before that Lancashire and Yorkshire Cricket and Football club. Newton Heath, was originally a club for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway workers, sort of like Sunderland FC was originally a team for school teachers. Newton Heath wore the colours green and gold – which is why one side of the kit is gold (remember, it’s reversible!), the green-and-gold of Newton Heath, was also a reason why the colours of the green and gold Manchester United kit for the 1996 season’s away kit were so.

Football kits are always going to be expensive. Socks, shorts and shirts. This kit, is worth the money, to me anyway, perhaps not to any other team’s fans, but to me, and I suppose to other Manchester United fans. I just have the shirt though, because that’s the nicest part, and I wouldn’t walk around wearing the whole kit – I used to do that though, when I was little – with the first kits I ever had. The White and Black side of the kit is the nicest. And I wear that one – because that’s the side the Manchester United Megastore put the shirt printing on. It has a sort of holey material – although not holey like string-vest type of holey – more like airtex tops, but not. The main ‘body’ of the shirt is white, with the sleeves being black (on both long sleeved and short sleeved shirts, that is) and a black collar with a touch of gold around the edges. The shirt, as always, has the beautiful Manchester United badge (although it’ll never be as beautiful now Manchester United dropped the words ‘football club’ from
it). On this shirt, although the badge is usually red and yellow, it’s black and gold, with the little devil (who should really be called ‘The red devil’ – but it’s black, so I can’t really), and the ship. Above the badge, which is on the left hand side (as usual), is a little badge thing, saying that it’s the centenary kit. Also, there’s a little plastic card type at the bottom, saying that it’s a ‘Authentic Licensed product’. Naturally, there’s the sponsors name (Vodafone) and the kit makers name (Umbro).

Turn it over, and there’s my name: ‘Fitzpatrick 16’. Fitzpatrick, not because of the old, old MUFC player, John Fitzpatrick, or the ex-academy player, Ian Fitzpatrick, but me, Hannah Fitzpatrick. It’s lucky I did ‘phone up the Megastore for the shirt, otherwise I wouldn’t of been able to have my surname, because for the Internet Megastore, and most places, you’re only allowed to have ten letters, and Fitzpatrick has eleven. I was going to have the number seven, but not for Beckham, because well, even though he’s a great player, I don’t like him all that much, as a player. It was going to be seven for Cantona. Eric Le Roi, or, if you prefer, Eric The King, the greatest player ever alive. I did that last season you know, my shirt says ‘Cantona 7’, even though Eric wasn’t there. I decided not to do it this year, so I went for sixteen, not because of my age (because that would have to be 15 – Oops, eek, I lied to you again - sorry!), but for Roy Keane-o’s number.

The gold side’s plain. MUFC only print numbers on one side, which is the white side. Even though it is nice, the gold side isn’t as nice, because the badge’s and sponsor’s name are just printed on, rather than properly sewn on badges. Even though I doubt much care was taken making the whole shirt, I like to think
there was, and you do get the feeling that not the same amount of care was put into the gold side, as the white side.

Right, I know people don’t see the point in buying football shirts like this: so here’s why I do. It’s simply, simply, because I want to show my support, and love, for Manchester United. I’ve always had shirts, because I’ve always loved football. I remember my first kit, which was so wonderful. I remember receiving it as a birthday present, and I loved it, one reason why was because I had never really had a ‘real’ football kit before. I didn’t discard it on the floor at the end of the day like I usually do with clothes, I took pride in hanging it up in my wardrobe, and making sure I didn’t get it muddy, in case the stains wouldn’t come out. Wearing and buying a football shirt, isn’t the same as playing in. I used to, pretending I was playing for Manchester United. It was just what I did – now, I just wear it. The team I play for has their own kit, which, obviously isn’t as nice as the United one, it doesn’t even have a name on it, only my number. If I supported that team, like I support Manchester United, even if the team is just a Saturday girls’ league team, then yeh, I would wear the shirt, to show my support. I have to have the Manchester United shirts, because I need, though more want, to show the world who I support. You see? I once had the privilege to meet Sir Alex Ferguson, even if it was just at the local races (I actually only went because I heard Sir Alex was going to be there), because he had his horse running (Kings of Europe). I asked him for his Autograph, and he automatically went to sign the MUFC shirt I was wearing. I didn’t let him, and told him to sign a scrap of paper instead, telling him that if he signed the shirt I would never be able to wash it again, because the signature would come out, so then I wouldn’t be able
to wear it again, and I didn’t want that – because I love Manchester United so much, I want to show everyone who I support. He seemed quite pleased I said that actually.

I’ve kept everyone of my shirts/kits. I once even was nice enough to give one to my little brother, because he said he supported them, until he drew a massive number 11 on the back in blue biro, so I took it back off him. I take pride in my shirts, I suppose. I love them, and I’ll always keep them, it’s just one of those things, like for every pair of football boots I’ve had, I’ve kept the stud tightner/remover, for no reason in particular, except I’ve wanted to. You know what I mean? I love Manchester United, so I keep the old shirts, and I wear the current shirts. It’s just what I do, even if they are expensive, to me, they’re just a season’s essential.
