Marriage - Is it outdated?

Advantages: love, secure, love!!

Disadvantages: not right for all

I am twenty five years old and have been happily married for six years (infact six years yesterday!). I cannot nor would I ever preach that marriage is a must, as for some quite simply it is NOT right. I do however get rather annoyed and yes defensive when I hear people say it is outdated and why bother?? For some it is a religous move, maybe a cultural thing, others a declaration of love and trust. For me it was all of the above. I was happy, in love, it felt right, I wanted our love blessed in the eyes of god and yes it is what 'you do'. What ever the reason, whatever your age, race, sex, if marriage feels right for you then it IS right.

I don't feel that marriage is outdated at all. Maybe some parts of it are. I agree in gay marriages for example, and see no reason why such a ceromony should not be performed in churches. However I am a romantic person and to me Love is the most important ingrediant in any marriage. Closely followed by trust of course. Yes, you can get love from a live in relationship, so why marry? Well to me that is all part of the love thing. Maybe I am old fashioned in my values a little but I feel that marriage is the natural progression in a relationship and rather than 'proves' that love I feel it seals it.

After all in this day and age as sadly we have seen, divorce is so easy to come by. Marriage no longer has to be for life if things go wrong. I have to confess that was my argument for getting married so young. I was nineteen and sooo in love, and to my annoyance every man and his dog (including family) felt they were duty bound to tell me what a big mistake I was making and how I would regret it, some even thought I was pregnant and it was a 'shotgun' wedding!! My answer to my critcis were 'well its what we want and at the end of the day nothing is forever and we can always get divorced'. Shocked? Well a lot of people were, some told me my attitude was immature, but my
point was not that I would get divorced if the going got tough but simply to silence those intent on ruining what should have been an exciting time. Let me make my own mistakes.

Similarly, I feel that those who like to preach that marrage is outdated are doing the same. Fine if marriage isent your cup of tea, I have nothing against your lifestyle. Enjoy life, be happy and let us old marrieds be happy too!!!!! I am still very much in love with my husband and five years after marriage had a baby (so NO I was NOT pregnant on my wedding day!!) My hubby is in the Royal Navy and away often, which makes things hard, a lot of naval marriages fail for this reason. Yet I think me and mine will go on into our eighties, why? quite simply because our secret is to keep the love alive. Marriage isent outdated for me, it is the best thing in my life. Go on give it a whirl you may be surprised!! Its not all pipe and slippers you know!!!!! ;)

I think your emphasising that you could get divorced undermines the point, although of course you weren't saying you would - hope you and Craig carry on into your 80s Ben
